Rodriquez is currently on the disabled list and is expected to be until the All Star break. Let’s assume he gets suspended for 50 games. What prevents the Yankees from taking him off the disabled list 50 games early when he couldn’t have played in any case and serve a meaningless suspension? I don’t think suspended players either receive a salary nor count against the 25 man roster so I don’t see what the cost doing this would be. I’m don’t even believe they count in the 40 man roster.
They don’t even need to do that. He can serve the suspension while on the DL. It’s happened before, though I don’t know the player’s name off the top of my head.
I’ll believe it when MLB announces it. Rodriguez and Braun have been linked to [del]Dr. Nick[/del] Anthony Bosch, but nobody knows if that’s going to lead to suspensions because the newspaper may not share its notes with MLB. I’ve never heard anything solid about Granderson and Cano.
The cost is to the player not the team. The player loses his salary for about 1/3 of a season. So Arod would lose about 10 mil. That’s a pretty big fine.
I’d heard rumors about Cano last year on one of the SBNation blogs and the other posters to that thread seemed to consider the originator of the rumor to have a reliable track record.
But the cost to the palyer should be $$$ as well as time missed. If a suspension can be served on the DL then why isn’t there just a monetary fine, so many games salary. It seems unfair that some players don’t actually miss time due to a suspension and others do.
Yes, the fact that the punishment for cheating is only having a net worth of $290 million, rather than one of $300 million, is sure to discourage the use of performance enhancing drugs in the future.
You think everyone who is caught has $290 million? For most players it is a big hit. And baseball has by far the most strict PED policy and there is talk of making it stricter.
Not everyone who is caught gets fined $10 million dollars, since it’s based on yearly salary.
Seriously, imagine that the punishment for robbing banks was that you weren’t allowed to rob banks any more for 6 months. I know what my new career would be.
For someone making the minimum 1/3 of your salary is a big amount. For anyone 1/3 of your yearly salary is a big amount. You think they should be able to foreclose on their houses? I’m not sure what you think should be done. Castration? A lot of what is against the PED policy isn’t even close to being illegal. You can get nailed for things that anyone else can buy in GNC. Or get legally and easily from your doctor. Yes I know most are for much more serious things. But baseball is by far the strongest American pro sport when it comes to PED policy. 50 game suspension for the 1st offense. 100 games 2nd offense. lifetime ban 3rd offense. The first league to test for HGH and testosterone. Maybe you believe it should be a lifetime ban for the 1st offense. That seems to be the same as the death penalty for the above mentioned bank robbery.
