Running digital distribution game sale/special thread

It’s coming. There are some really cool looking gameplay trailers out. Check out the shrink ray one. Don’t know if I’ll pay full price but I’ll wait for the reviews and buy it when there’s a good sale.

I just want to give a big thanks to SenorBeef and all the other contributors in this thread, because without it, I would have never heard of some of these sites and none of these deals. I just went to GOG.com and downloaded the following games for less than $75:

Panzer General 2
Descent 1+2
Baldur’s Gate 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete
Might and Magic 6-game combo pack (M&M’s 1-6, including World of Xeen)
Unreal Tournament 2004
Red Baron Pack (1+2)
Freespace 2

16 games for $75, less than $5 each. I don’t have to upgrade my computer and I get to rediscover lost classics and play others that I never got around to (like Baldur’s Gate).

I’ll see y’all in a few years.

In steam’s continuing effort to kill us all, big news:

I’m not going to make a post every day about every deal, just the stuff I find to be a big deal or worthwhile personally, so you should log into steam daily or check their twitter to see if it’s something you’re interested in.

Today it’s Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising for $5. For non-daily deals, they’ve got Eve Online for $5, the Hearts of Iron series 70% off, and Swords and Soldiers HD for $5.

D2D has Star Trek Online digital deluxe for $7.50. EA Store has Sims 3 and expansion for 50% off. Lots of other stuff.

Good to see these daily deals haven’t dried up the mid-week and weekend and other deals - there’ve been at least 7 or 8 new sales in addition to the daily sales.

At the moment Worms: Reloaded is $10 (half off), which I want - except I could’ve got it for that price last October and it miffs me that I’d have to pay the same price as I would then… I’ve been waiting for it to hit $5. Apox (and dlc) is half off for $7.50 ($10 with dlc) - isometric post apocalyptic rts type of thing that looked interesting except I’m not sure anyone plays it. Singularity is 2/3rds off ($10). Plain Sight is $2.50, which is an interesting looking game I never got around to playing.

All the Splinter Cell games are $4-8 on gamersgate.

Dragon Age 2 is 50% off ($30, since you have to pay $60 for that bundle of dissapointment normally) on d2d. Also on d2d, all Atari titlesare 50% off. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (with expansions) is a great game and $15, but I’ve been waiting for it to slip under $10 somewhere to rebuy it - but if you’ve never played it and you like that sort of game, it’s worth $15 easily. Test Drive Unlimited 1 and 2 are both $10. Witcher Enhanced is $10.

I know it’s not a sale or anything, but I’d like to point out that Fable III is available on Steam now for $49.99 if anybody other than me was waiting for it on the PC.

I got it when it was 10% off for preorder. Haven’t played yet.

Ubisoft week on steam with a different sale each day. Today is Prince of Persia - 66% off the games individually or get all 5 for $15 total. Awesome deal if you like that sort of thing. All of the Ubisoft games are 33% off all week, but don’t buy anything until you see if there’s a day dedicated to the game where it’s on an even steeper discount. The regular daily sale is Mini Ninjas for $7 (66% off). Plain Sight (an odd game that’s hard to describe) is 50% off for $2.50.

D2D has the sims medieval at 50% off ($25).

Spore and Dead Space are $8 each on GamersGate.

Any thoughts on what other Ubisoft games might be coming up? I played the Prince of Persia game that came out early last decade and enjoyed it, but heard bad things about the others. Are there other games that might come out at less than $5 that are worth watching for?

By the way, thanks for keeping this thread up–I don’t post much in it at all, but I check it regularly!

On steam, daily ubisoft sale has The Settlers 7 and RUSE for 50% off.

The daily deal is UPLINK at $3.40.

The mid-week deals are all Sam & Max games at 66% off and Dungeons (looks like a dungeon keeper style game) for $20 at 50% off.

Check it every day your self - there are too many new deals all the time now for me to keep up with them.

What’s helpful is when you (or someone else) says, “By the way, this deal is actually a great deal!” then I can check it out. Steam has 100 specials right now, which is too many for me to bother with. But if, for example, you see Arkham Asylum on sale ever, I’d love a heads-up, in case I forgot to check that day.

That’s usually what I do - make posts either when something I recommend is on sale, or if a bunch of new stuff comes out at once. But steam started doing a different deal every day - it’s often a decent deal, but not something I care that much about, so I don’t post about it - so if you want to see every sale, get on their twitter feed or use steamgamesales.com (also covers other sites) or whatever.

I’m considering Far Cry and Far Cry 2. Far Cry has the advantage of being ridiculously cheap today ($2.50) and getting great reviews, but it’s 7 years old. Far Cry 2 is more expensive ($5) and gets slightly less good reviews, but it’s a little newer. I enjoy FPS games pretty well, especially when there’s a story (I’m currently replaying Deus Ex and loving it), but prefer games with a fantasy/SF element; that’s not necessary though, and I really liked Max Payne 2, for example.

Folks who played Far Cry or its sequels, do you think they’re worth it? Not so much the price point, as it’s ridiculously cheap, but worth the time investment (I have about 5-10 hours a week of gaming time)?

I liked Far Cry. The story is pretty light; it’s no Deus Ex or Max Payne, but there’s more plot than Doom. Environments are varied and there’s some semblance of a stealth option. After a certain level, though, the enemies got simply ridiculous and I simply abandoned the game. For $2.50, I’m tempted to pick up the digital version to see if I can actually finish the game this time.

I can’t speak to Far Cry 2. It was actually produced by a different developer, so I understand it’s pretty different from the first game.

Far Cry was groundbreaking and should still hold up nicely on a modern machine. The plot gets too sci-fi for my taste later in the game, but it’s a lot of fun. But since you like sci-fi mixed in I’m pretty sure you’d like it.

Far Cry 2 is set in Africa and has a much different feel. The outdoor/graphics engine is nice. Driving is good, combat is a bit off to me, not sure why. The main problem with the game is I’m really not sure what the overall plot is, maybe I just waste too much time driving around and taking out groups of hostiles.

The SAME hostiles, over and over again. you need to pass a series of checkpoints ot get anywhere, and every check point is always hostile to you. And the mobs respawn after a short amount of time.

So you spend your time killing the same guys at the same checkpoints a disproportionately large amount of time instead of completing fun objectives.

I was going to add to my post that the hostiles seem to respawn, but I wasn’t positive. That is indeed annoying. It’s fun to roam around and explore and fight, but the overall plot didn’t grab me.

Steam deals: Ubisoft daily deal all brothers in arms games 75% off. Regular daily deal: Star trek online $3.75. Weekend deal: Shogun 2 total war $33.50. Not sure how long: All AI war, city of heroes: going rogue complete, and king arthur collection 50% off.

Impulse has the hearts of iron 3 megapack for $13.

D2D has Empire total war complete for $17, medieval 2 for $3.75, company of heroes gold for $7.50.

I went for Far Cry 1 but not 2; for $2.50, it sounds more up my alley. And on the one hand I’d like a new game to put my new computer through its paces (Bioshock 2 is the newest thing I’ve played on it, and by the time I was done with that game it was a total chore to finish), but on the other hand I’d rather have a good game than a flashy one.

There really was no overall plot, or at least no plot that made sense.

Warning: The following spoils the whole far cry 2 game

You’re supposed to kill the jackal, but for some reason spend all your time doing terrible things for the two completely interchangable factions (including, for example, destroying a cure for malaria… P.S. you have malaria and don’t bother to grab any). One of them betrays you and kills your friends as well as some civilians who helped you. Soon after, you’re back to working for them like nothing happened - no mention of it or anything. You end up murdering pretty much the whole leadership of both factions, then finally encounter the jackal and somehow now you are best buddies (no explanation, and this despite the fact he framed you for murder and left you to be tortured to death in a prison like 10 minutes of gameplay ago) who are going to help all the civilians in the country escape. Your friends ambush you (including possibly some who died earlier) again with absolutely no explanation and you’re forced to kill them (or I guess run the whole map with them chasing you shooting you in the back) You then either trigger some dynamite blowing yourself and a mountain pass up to save the civilians or you take a case of diamonds to bribe the guards to let the civilians into the next nation then commit suicide (player choice, the jackal does whichever one you don’t pick). The End.

It’s a goddamn shame because the engine is really beautiful even after all these years and it’s a really, really immersive experience. Too bad the other half (gameplay, story) are absolutely miserably bad. The first 20 minutes of the game is AMAZING… the next 10 - 15 hours are those 20 minutes repeated over and over and…

Assassin’s Creed and Assassin’s Creed II are both 66% off, and Assassin Creed III is 33% off on steam today. Prices are roughly $6, $10 and $40 respectively.
