Running digital distribution game sale/special thread

Humble Indie Bundle #7 is out! Snapshot, The Binding of Isaac +Wrath of the Lamb DLC, Closure, Indie Game: The Movie, and Shank 2, plus donate more than the average and get Dungeon Defenders +DLC and Legend of Grimrock. Also, soundtracks (FLAC and MP3) come with Dungeon Defenders, Legend of Grimrock, Snapshot, Closure, Indie Game, and Shank 2. Current average payment is only $6.14.

Okay, so I’m giving away copies of Snapshot, The Binding of Isaac +Wrath of the Lamb DLC, Closure, Indie Game: The Movie, and Shank 2. Random number generator will pick the winners. No need to thank me!

Someone created a winter sale thread. I’ll post deals there. One thing I want to mention real quick though - sony online entertainment is having a 3 for 1 day on their station cash points tomorrow (friday), which is what you use for their freemium and f2p games. If you haven’t tried planetside 2, try it quickly and decide if you like it - then spend some money on it, because 3x days are rare and now is the best time to buy. It’s a seriously amazing game, and you can try for free. It’s also going to have double xp over the christmas break, so you can catch up quickly.

If I remember correctly, the main set of games usually come together as one key, but I already bought BoI so I’m wondering if it will give me a copy to use as a gift or if it will just be wasted. Also want to know, if I select the gift code option at purchase, can I gift myself the games I don’t already own?

Basically, I’m wondering how Steam handles multiple purchases of the same game.

You can gift games to yourself - at least, that’s what the UI says you can do. I have not tried it yet.

My experience with getting additional copies of games I already own via the Humble Bundle is that it does not generate gift versions of those. The cases where an additional purchase has generated a gift version is when Steam specifically calls it out in the product description.

Origin Store has Crysis & Crysis 2:Maximum Edition for $5 each this weekend through the 15th.

Uplay Store has 66% off Ghost Recon: Future Warrior (both std. & deluxe editions) through the 14th.

There’s a completely free indie bundle called The Free Bundle (innovative, eh?) out there. They do suggest you go to the developer’s sites to donate if you’re feeling charitable.

Gamefly is having a PC game sale this weekend, the best deal of which is Transformers: Fall of Cybertron for $20. That’s a good $10 lower than it has been elsewhere, I believe.

If you use Chrome and Steam, get this extension. Right now. Go, go, go…

You Don’t Know Jack is $2.99 (85% off) at Amazon. Steam activated

It’s owned by THQ which is having its properties go up for auction this week or next so if you have any interest, this might be a good time to secure a copy. No telling if its eventual owner will continue to publish it, put it on sale, keep it on Steam, etc.

Whatever you do, for the love of god do not use the Gamefly online store. It is ridiculously terrible. You have to take a phone call to confirm the validity of the purchase, but their call center is only open during regular business hours. You also need to download and install their PC client and use it to handle the download. THEN, before you can install the game, you have to manually enter the registry key to confirm that you made the purchase into the custom-built download client that just made you log into their servers with the account that made the purchase.

Oh, and unless you want automated e-mail responses, they only have tech support and customer service during regular business hours. And their online help section is a joke. You can’t even browse for answers without first logging into your account.

Hitman: Absolution is $17 from Gametap.

I’ve bought three different games from Gamefly (over three separate occasions) and never had anything but a stock, automated online purchase. Certainly never had to use the phone.

I was hoping that would just blow-over, but I guess that’s unfair to Gamefly. Feel free to skip to the bolded TLDR for the short version.

When I started the account and made the purchase (through the website, not the client), it asked for my phone number to make a call to confirm the card (note, nowhere did it say anything about why this was necessary), but this was an opt-out button, which I took. It warned that his might cause delays in processing the order, but I went ahead. Then I waited, and waited, and realized that it wasn’t going to enable to download anytime soon I started browsing the site, and then looking online. Amidst a slew of nightmare stories about their snail-mail rental service and sub-50% reviews on customer service sites, I found a couple stories of people trying to use their download service and having similar issues. So I made an ass out of u and me (but really just me), and sent off an e-mail to their site explaining that I would not be available to take a call the next day until the latter part of their listed hours, and would there be a way to handle it online?

Lo and behold, the next day I have a politely worded e-mail to the effect of “um, what are you talking about, the order was processed.” Now, as late as midnight it still hadn’t gone through (I made the purchase during the afternoon), I didn’t check after that until I got the e-mail, so I can’t rightly say what proportion of a day it took them.

Now, the other thing I need to fess up to is that I had to enter the registry key because the game I got was a Steamworks game (which kind of makes you wonder why Gamefly requires you to use their client to get it if you’re actually downloading it via Steam), but there where several threads on their support site about people having issues finding the key to enter into Gamefly, so I (incorrectly) assumed that must be S.O.P. for their client.

TLDR; As it turns out, Gamefly is actually only marginally less convenient than Steam, my difficulties were largely a combination of odd circumstances w/my transaction and my misunderstanding various online questions, customer service reports, and their FAQs.

I have no idea why my card required special processing; maybe because it was my first transaction with them? I don’t have bad credit or anything like that. I still have no idea what I was doing wrong with the site navigation that it kept asking me to log into my account just to browse the support section, as it hasn’t done that since the first day.

Eh, no harm. I’ve heard a bunch of people say they have shitloads of trouble ordering through GMG when I’ve never had any problem with them. In fact, I had a friend Paypal me the money to get him a game from GMG today because they had the best price but he absolutely can not get his bank and GMG to talk nice to one another. I assume that people’s stated experiences are legitimately as they see them but that they may not be universal.

And speaking of GMG, here’s some news for any Aussies or New Zealanders in the studio audience:

Paradox has gifted their forum members with a Steam activation code for EU3 Chronicles, which is the base game with all four expansions. This is possibly my favorite game of all time, and still play regularly. Since I have no need of the code, I’ll give it to the first person to PM me.

Not terribly compelling, but the individual DLCs for battlefield 3 are on sale for $10 instead of $15. So if you want to get back into the game (I am going to a bit) you can catch up to the latest this way. Till 10am tomorrow.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare has a free weekend on steam. Looks a lot like the combat in M&B. I’m definitely going to give it a try, you guys should try with us. $12.50/50% sale too.

The entire Square Enix library is 50% off this weekend on Steam, with the Deus Ex franchise as a 75% daily special, including DLC (I imagine other daily specials on Saturday and Sunday as well). Other Square Enix franchises include the Hitman series (Absolution at 33%), the Thief series, the Tomb Raider series (newest one only 10% off), Just Cause, and Sleeping Dogs.

The Square Enix sale continues with Hitman: Absolution at 66% off for today’s daily deal (US $16.99). You can also get the previous 3 Hitman games bundled for $6.24.

Amazon has a Microsoft Arcade/Indie bundle for $10 – $5 if you have a voucher from the Editor’s Choice promotion last month*

Bundle contains:
Deadlight
Mark of the Ninja
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Toy Soldiers
Iron Brigade

**If you bought a game between mid November and the end of December 2012, you received one voucher credit per game bought.

Posting this in this thread just because Chivalry is still on sale for another 19 hours. We’re going to get an SDMB Chivalry: Medieval Warfare server going and have a couple regular game nights a week. Check it out. If you’re interested, grab it now and join us.

Amazon has a ridiculously large “2012 Paradox Pack” which is $14.99 but even cheaper at $9.99 if you still have an Editor’s Choice coupon. It is currently sold out and Amazon is getting more keys in. As a result, they are extending the Editor’s Choice offer on this product only until Feb 2nd.
