Rush nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

OK but Nancy Wilson was and still is one of the hottest female guitar players ever!

Then half the Dope will be making an unplanned trip to watch?

Heh heh. My take on hearing they were nominated was, “They aren’t in yet?” Oh well.

Rush, Kraftwerk and Public Enemy absolutely deserve to be in there. Which means they probably won’t make it.

While I don’t like Kiss at all (I’m over 12 years old), they really should be in, as well. Of my own favorites, Husker Du and The Replacements ought to get nominated, though I don’t see a chance in hell of that happening.

I kind of thought it was more “Rock & Roll” these days to be left out of the Hall. Be that as it may, I love Rush & it’s nice to see them get some recognition as an influential act.

I can think of no better way to honor the esteemed Rock & Roll Hall of fame.

Oddly enough, I happen to be friends with a member of Blackmore’s Night’s current touring band. I saw them a couple of times & I must say that it’s a great show.

Deep Purple definitely deserves a spot in the HOF. I believe Ritchie straps on a Strat for the “post-renaissance” DP songs. It seems that he was so unhappy for so long, I’m glad he found Candace, changed direction and found a reason to keep on performing.

In a perfect world we would get to see Steve Morse and Ritchie Blackmore on stage playing together. Just saw Morse a few weeks ago playing with Flying Colors. Still brilliant. I haven’t seen Blackmore since the Perfect Strangers tour.

Another year with Todd Rundgren not being nominated.

Come on! At least nominate him as a producer! Bat Out of Hell? We’re an American Band? Skylarking? Love My Way?

Remember how many Chic songs were sampled. Fromthe Wikipedia entry about Good Times:

One song that connects Grandmaster Flash, Queen and Daft Punk? That alone should put them in the Hall of Fame.

Agreed, and disco is much closer to what I consider to be rock-n-roll than rap is, the racists of the time just couldn’t see that.

I’m a 40 year old black guy and a bass player and as much as I love PE (and NWA to a lesser extent) I don’t think they belong in the rock-n-roll hall of fame. I’m sure one of them ( probally PE) will get in because it’s PC, but I don’t agree with that.

What do you think of Bernard Edwards as a bass player?

PE is way more rock & roll than lots of artists inducted (Madonna, Jackson Browne, Leonard Cohen…).

What would you say to a someone who said they didn’t think Rush deserved to be in the RnRHoF?

Not me. Hypothetically, of course.

Has anyone come across a list of which Deep Purple members are nominated? The RRHoF seems to be all over the map regarding bands with multiple line-ups. Everyone that’s ever been a member of The Rolling Stones is in, including Ian Stewart, but only the original members of The Kinks and The Who are in (although Kenney Jones is in for Faces). Only the original Black Sabbath line-up is in (no Ronnie James Dio), but both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar are in for Van Halen (no Extreme guy, though). And there’s the infamous “let’s leave Bob Welch out of Fleetwood Mac” omission.

I’d guess everyone from the Machine Head-era lineup + Rod Evans. Will Steve Morse get included? Coverdale?

My predictions:
Rush - won’t get in. Probably nominated to shut up the complainers, like KISS a few years back.

Deep Purple - in

Public Enemy - I’ve been saying since the Hall first starting ignoring 80s acts that had become eligible and backfilling with every Doo-Wop band that ever stepped into a studio that the only acts left that were locks for induction in first year of eligibility were (a) Guns & Roses (b) Public Enemy and © Nirvana. GnR got in last year, PE is nominated. They’re in for sure.

NWA - Not gonna induct 2 rap acts in the same year. And they were too scary anyway.

Heart
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - one of these will get in to fill the “women who rock” slot, but I’m not sure which one.

Randy Newman - critical darling. Will get in eventually, but not this year

Donna Summer - in, thanks to the recently deceased sympathy vote

Kraftwerk -hugely influential. Surprised they weren’t already in as they’ve eligible for several years. In.

Procol Harum - nope. Deep Purple will siphon of the oldies vote, Rush will pull the prog vote, and the under-50 vote (if there is any) thinks “Whiter Shade of Pale was the Moody Blues and hey, why aren’t *they *in yet?”

Chic - Donna Summer already locked up this year’s disco vote. Nile Rogers should definitely get in for his work as a producer, even if Chic never gets in.

The Meters
Albert King
Paul Butterfield Blues Band - The “let’s show everyone how hip we are by nominating some lesser known acts” category. None will get in.

The Marvelettes - They finally inducted every Doo Wop act they could find, so they’re moving on to the girl groups. Possibly in, but I doubt it. Depends on what the cut-off is this year (usually it’s 5 acts)

“Respectfully, I disagree.”

Speaking for split p&j - whom I have never encountered or compared music notes with here on the Dope - he *loves *Bernard Edwards as a bass player, because that is the only acceptable answer  (hope that was okay, sir)

Seriously, as a guitarist, not a bassist, the team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards was bulletproof. There’s a reason Edwards’ basslines got sampled so much. The pocket* he created with his basslines was perfect - so easy to groove with.

*Pocket: musical term meaning the how the beats of the rhythm section - typically the bass and drums - come together to establish a groove that the other musicians in the band can work with. If, as a guitarist, I get a clear sense of my rhythm section’s groove and I work within it, or go outside it, with clarity and control because it is so solid, I am “in the pocket” that they created. Great funk bassists create some of the best pockets - Bernard, Bootsie, Larry Graham (Sly and the Family Stone), etc…

Here are my selections:

Rush
Deep Purple
Public Enemy
Heart
Donna Summer
Chic
Albert King

If I had to choose one I would go with Chic. Sorry, disco haters, but Rogers and Edwards were just awesome together.

And in case any disco-hating rock fans doubt that Chic had real players, let’s remember that Led Zeppelin picked Tony Thompson to play drums with them, at a few special events.

If the above-linked poll is any guide, we’re limited to five selections. Therefore I amend my votes to:

Rush
Deep Purple
Heart
Chic
Albert King

From Wiki: Over the course of their career, Rush has come to release 24 gold records and 14 platinum records (3 of which have gone multi-platinum), placing them within the top 3 for the most consecutive gold albums by a rock band.

Releasing albums and touring, and still selling out concert halls, for 38 years.

If they don’t belong, what exactly is the criteria?
