Rush's "The Camera Eye"

I don’t know why, but the song (by which I mean the music) reminds me of some early 80s PBS show theme. Not any one in particular, I mean. Just sounds like it could have been the theme for some news/culture program of the time. That is all.

“Big Money” sounds like it could be used for a 6 o’ clock newscast’s theme. I remember it was used by FOX Pittsburgh in the 80’s for Penguins games.

Did you ever hear the theme song to “W5”, a Canadian newsmagazine show? It was Supertramp’s ‘Fool’s Overture’, which sounds fairly similar to The Camera Eye in parts. Maybe you triggered a memory of it?

Perhaps, but it seems unlikely. I think something about the keyboard sound just reminds me of the kind of music used for PBS shows of the period, which my parents watched a lot of at the time.

Also, “The Big Money” rocks.

Here, here! Rush just rocks, period.

“The Camera Eye” is one of my favorite Rush songs. I love the lyrics.

And they’re playing it during this summer’s tour, you know.

I’ll hear it live for the first time on Sept. 29th in Atlanta.

For the record, they knock it out of the park on this tour.

Geddy’s Oberheim synths from this period were used by many ‘non rock’ musicians. There are movies from this time period that not only sound very dated, but evoke “The Camera Eye” in their soundtracks.

A little off topic…I’ve been struggling to reproduce the arpeggiated ‘noise’ from this song on my Roland SH-32, with not much success. If anyone is a synth head and wants to lend a hand, I’m all ears.

Mine, too! Really fun to play along, and I love the dreamy, airy, positive and energetic vibe that it has.
