Russia may be about to invade Ukraine. {Russia has invaded as of Feb 24-2022}

As General Omar Bradley famously said:

Amateurs talk strategy. Professionals talk logistics.

Only one way to do that: DON’T INVADE YOUR FUCKING NEIGHBORS.

There’s only one lesson to learn from this event: If Putin amasses armor on your border, the time to go start hitting it will artillery is now. Better to destroy it in Russia than to wait and destroy it in your town.

Let’s try to use Kyiv.

KyivNotKiev

Let’s not. The correct spelling in English is Kiev; always has been, and always will be.

Well the correct spelling of Beijing used to be Pekin too…

Thanks for the correction. If that’s what the people who live there prefer, I have no objection to it. Mind you, I’m 59 and will likely lapse on occasion.

The people who live there prefer Kyiv, so Kyiv is what they get.

It’s a transliteration. The choice right now is whether to use the one from Russian when Ukraine was under the Soviet Union or to use the one from Ukrainian…

It’s not irrelevant at the moment.

Even in Bombay?

The name change might make it hard for troubadours to get there.

Russia doesn’t appear to be fighting well at all, I agree with that. But I still think Ukraine’s best hope is not to physically win the war but for some oligarch to have Putin shot in the head.

If you think English keeps spellings “always,” you are unfamiliar with English.

I found that video interesting. it seemed to me more of a improvised, ritualistic dance than either side trying to inflict any actual harm. The tank has machine guns and other small arms it can fire at close-in “targets”. The tank commander didn’t do this.

At least one of the Russian tank crew was sitting partially in the open and was vulnerable to attack. The civilians didn’t do this.

I see a lot of Posing going on. A lot of signals being sent. Of course this video is only one encounter but the Russian and Ukrainian people have many connections and I’m not sure there’s much of an appetite for blood in the conflict as a whole.

I wonder how much these armies really want to inflict actual injury and death on their cousins.

The real question is how any of those people would act if they weren’t being recorded. I personally think having a video camera in almost every persons pocket is the greatest deterrent to atrocities in the History of the world.

And Peking, too, I suspect.

Like the English have any moral authority on spellings and pronunciation in their own language, let alone anybody else’s.

Thames – pronounced “tems”

Lancastershire – no, not “lan-cast-er-shire” , “lan-ca-sheer.”

Fetherstonehaugh – “feather-stone-haw”? No…FANSHAW!!

It’s no wonder those people lost the empire.

And BTW, the Ukranian pronunciation is “keev”, not “key-ev”. One syllable. The other is Russian.

No kidding. IMO, this has blown up in Putin’s face.

My current favorite nutty theory: Just before Trump’s departure from office, counter espionage agents deliberately left “top secret” documents around that confirmed that the US intelligence services did not believe Putin would invade Ukraine, and if he did that the US would not do much.
A treasure trove of “intelligence” that basically emboldened Putin and made him think that NATO allies were disorganized and disagreed.

And they knew that this bogus intelligence in Trump’s hand would quickly make it’s way to Putin.
Essentially a version of the Canary Trap.

/ crazy theory

It’s not one syllable, that’s just how English speaking journalists pronounce it. It’s KEY-EVE.

This doesn’t seem like the bloodiest, most vicious all out war of all time, no.

Modnote: To all, lets take the pronunciation and spelling of Kyiv/Kiev to a new thread if you wish to continue this.
