Russian "deputy" does not like Finland "homoerotic" stamps

“Deputy Councillor” Vitaly Milonov of St. Petersburg needs some attention again. Last seen debating Stephen Fry: Stephen Fry confronts Vitaly Milonov over Russian law banning 'gay propaganda' - BBC Two - YouTube ; now he doesn’t approve of a postage stamp that Finland has issued.

St. Petersburg Times Story

I don’t have Fox News here, so I miss the kind of recreational outrage that Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly would provide. This guy is their almost like them.

Well, he is Russian, not FInn, so he doesn’t get a say in things…

I’ve got to say, I was expecting much more ambiguous stamps. If we had those in this country, I’d definitely start sending letters. My grandparents both have birthdays coming up…

Reading through this, I find myself thinking back on all the times I’ve heard that Americans suck at geography. Say what you will about a country that refers to its main landmass as “the* lower* 48”, which only makes sense if you’re orienting the map toward west, but at least we know what country we’re a part of.

Also, it seems to be that if you find yourself running the headline “Popular Finnish Stamps Outrage St. Petersburg Lawyer”, you’d be better off cutting out the middleman and making it “Press Announces Slowest News Day In World History”.

Yea, I was expecting some prude reacting to some ambiguous or nude but non-sexual image. Like John Ashcroft and the Blind Statue of Justice’s boob or something. But nope, those are pretty much exactly as advertised.

He’s saying the Russian post-office shouldn’t accept the stamps. The Russian post is head-quartered in Russia.

But even if it weren’t, it’s not like people aren’t allowed to comment on the actions of gov’ts that aren’t there own.

I’m pretty sure international postal treaties require postal services to deliver foreign mail, so it isn’t like Russia could just refuse to deliver envelopes with these stamps on it unless they want Finland to do the same to Russian origin mail. I do believe it would be ok for Russia to remove or censor the offending images as long as the mail is delivered, I know some countries will replace a tracking number with their own.

I’ve added a spoiler tag to the first post because of the two click rule we have.

I think Fry was being extraordinarily generous when he described that jackass as ‘semi-educated’. Also, Finns don’t take shit from Russia.

I like Finland’s attitude. I know it’ll be a freezing day in this town before I see the USPS put out a Mapplethorpe stamp.

But of course.

D’oh! Whoops, sorry and thanks,** Idle Thoughts.**

Yeah, it won’t happen, unless Deputy Milonov (I don’t believe this is an elected position, such as it’d be in Russia anyways) leads a league of concerned citizens down to the post office to personally sort and censor the mail.

Finland is great. Mapplethorpe stamp: Would. Be. Awesome.

I see what you did there.

Didn’t they join the Axis in WWII so that they could shoot Russians?

Markku Penttinen, development manager with Finland’s postal services providers Itella had worked with postage stamps for 20 years. He said that the Tom of Finland stamps have generated an unprecedented response – in some cases inspiring stiff resistance and in others a more welcoming attitude.

The Finns wanted Karelia - the northern border-land between the two countries. They’ve (Kingdom of Sweden/Finland -v- Russia) been fighting over it since the 800’s - even before Alexander Nevsky in the 1200’s. And into the Winter War of 1939-1940, which the Finns crushed the Red Army (at least at first).

The remarkable thing, to me, in WWII - is that the Finns’ only occupied Karelia to the northern limits of Leningrad/St Petersburg. They could easily have - and Hitler wanted them to - take the city itself. They could have broken the so-called “road of life” over Lake Ladoga that provided food and an escape route. But they did not. Good on the Finns.

I should imagine that they came to regret that.

“No good deed goes unpunished.”
-Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.

I read that as “two dick rule”. Which would also fit.

During the Continuation War, yeah. Earlier on when the USSR initially invaded Finland, France and the UK took the side of the Finns, though as was the style at the time nothing happened. The piss-poor Soviet showing against a far smaller power no doubt contributed to Hitler’s 1941 invasion.

Not without a lot of lube and patience.

All I can say is that it’s a good thing stamps have gone to self-adhesive. I don’t want to know who would think licking these stamps was… appropriate.
