Russian Name Question--quick answer, please?

I am in the middle of an Amazon Marketplace dispute with a person who affects very broken English, & claims to be named Olga Dementeva‏.

The exact nature of the dispute is unimportant at this time, for this question.

Is Olga Dementeva‏ a legitimate Russian name?

Or is it a faux Russian-sounding name.

Good Lord, Dude, it’s not that difficult.

Plug the name into Google. There are a few people with that actual name including a model and a mathematician. No clue if either one of those ripped you off on the Beanie Baby deal though.

A quick google brings up the words “Russian” and “scam” linked together, FWIW. I am of Russian heritage and frankly, it sounds made-up Russian to me.

The Russian spelling of it would be “Ольга Дементьева” which is a legitimate Russian name. I would spell it as Dementieva in English but there are no precise rules about this.

Any other input?

The name sounds perfectly legit to me; an ex-colleague has this surname.

Without more information, it’s hard to tell whether or not this person is out to scam you.

She bought a used electric fan from me, wants a refund, but doesn’t want to return it, due to shipping costs.

So she wants the item *and *what she paid for it ? That’s a novel approach to trade :stuck_out_tongue:

Made up how? Because it’s a bit generic? Both the forename and surname are common enough Russian names (tennis player Elena Dementieva being one relatively known example of the surname.)

In Soviet Union… well you know the rest.

Well, you’ve heard of avoir le beurre et l’argent du beurre, so it can’t be that novel.

Seeing as you are not a company that is required to do so, I see no reason to acquiesce to her request. If you’re wanting to be all nice about it, have her send it back, and offer to add the shipping costs back in on the refund once you get it back.

If you can’t guess, I suspect with the information given above that she is a fake. But even if she wasn’t, what’s unreasonable about my proposal?

If the fan is not as advertised, pay the shipping. If it is, you have to decide whether or not it’s worth your eBay feedback to refuse.

Amazon, Marketplace, not Ebay, which I never sell on nor buy from.

Also–it has been several days, & no further emails from Moscow Mary, as it were.

I first became suspicious, when her emails relected a bogus Russian accent.
In print.
And I mean that.

Oops.
