Oh, my goodness. You have got to get a copy of Bela Fleck’s 1988 masterpiece, Drive.
See first review: “My brother and I popped this CD into the deck of a rented truck as we headed from Jackson, WY, out toward the Wind River Range. About three tracks into it, we realized we were going nearly 90 miles an hour…Drive is the tightest, most frenetic, river-water-rolling, sleekest, greatest frikkin’ 'grass disc out there. Please listen responsibly.”
Rolling by Soul Coughing
Thousand Miles from Nowhere by Dwight Yoakam
nearly anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Road Goes on Forever and I’m Coming Home and Feelin’ Good Again and Crazy Cowboy Dreams and Copenhagen by Robert Earl Keen Jr.
I like Yonder Mountain String Band’s Rambler’s Anthem and Half Moon Rising and The Whoreshoes.
Of course, you’ve got to have cheezy eighties song breaks, like Flying Lizard’s version of “Money” or Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died” that you can sing along and freak out to when you’ve been driving for a long stretch.
I love a road trip too, Kalhoun. Last time I did this I was Ellie Mae Clampett with 2 big dogs, 3 cats, 4 parrots, 2 goldfish and a newborn. This time it’s whittled down to me, Mr. 'addi, a dog, a cat, a grown up kid and one kick-ass soundtrack. I already have a bunch of these, so I’m going to include:
Whipping Post
Midnight Rider
Ramble On
Roundabout
I’ve Been Everywhere
Thunder Road
Willin (both versions mentioned) Back in the Saddle Again
City of New Orleans
Hot Rod Lincoln
500 miles - Peter, Paul and Mary and hey, while I’m there – Early Mornin’ Rain
Roadhouse Blues & Riders on the Storm Lodi for Tortuga’s CCR Six Days on the Road – I’ve got the Livingston Taylor version, Kat
and hey, mick2940, does the Doc Watson parody of Movin’ On count? I’ve got that somewhere too. AveDementia I’ll report back on the Woody Guthrie, if I can find it in this mess.
Sweet! I don’t have this one, but I’m getting it. I love Bela Fleck and it looks like a perfect CD. (I bet you only saw about 10 other cars the whole across the basin.)

The biggest problem with the Road Trip Songs CD is that I invariably don’t have time to assemble enough songs to get me through the trip. Then I end up in Cornhusker, Nebraska listening to the sow report for four hours. I hate when that happens!
