Maybe this has been asked before but as slow as the board is I just didn’t look.
How many ,don’t even know what term to use here so excuse me, gawkers does it take to clog up the board like it has been the last couple of days.
Do you have a counter that changes as I log on or off.
What happens if I don’t log off?
I usually check the Board several times a day to see “whats happening” and usually avoid between noon and 2ish. It seems like that time slot has expanded from 9 am to 3ish.
I’ve also noticed a lot more threads.I used to be able to check the days happenings which were all on one page.
Anything I can do to help speed things up?

It just took 5 minutes to display this thread. :frowning:

Well, you can always read other web sites waiting for this one to load. Even read the newsgroups too.

justwannano, I don’t think remaining “logged on” when you’re away from the board is the problem. The problem lies in the number of people accessing the server simultaneously (and of course the fact that the recent vBulletin upgrade to 1.1.3 no longer gracefully handles that number of users.) Peak times seem to be 8:00 - 17:00 (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM) in the continental USA, which, allowing for time zone differences, probably would place the “peak peak time” from 8:00 to 15:00 (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) for Pacific Standard Time (you can adjust for your own time zone.)

To help speed things up, the best would be to use the board outside the peak times.

Someone just E’d me about this thread, and about the Board’s continuing problems (I haven’t checked in since last week).

“To help speed things up, the best would be to use the board outside the peak times.”

–You are joking, right, Arnie? I didn’t see a smiley, but I assume you ARE joking? I only have Internet access during working hours, so if what you say is true . . .

It’s been fun, it’s been swell, but it looks like I won’t be back. I’ll miss y’all, but until the Internet technology gets beyond the “two tin cans with a string” phase, I just have too much to do during business hours to spend ten minutes waiting for a thread to load.

S’long, guys . . .

From vBulletin’s site:

EEK! PHP is a server side scripting solution, which I suspect of not scaling well. MySQL has a reputation of being a “toy” DBMS as well. I don’t have specific experience with either of these, but I do have experience in the DBMS industry, and know what I’ve heard about MySQL. If PHP is purely interpreted, rather than having a compiled form, that is a bad sign for high throughput.

Surely, there’s some company providing a BBS package out there that is really industrial strength - connection pooling, various levels of result caching, distributable across multiple servers, etc.

Eve, don’t run away just yet! The techs are busy in the back room, pouring green liquids in test tubes, and the alembics are puffing out blue smoke from above the bunsen burners. These problems too shall pass.

But unfortunately I was not kidding. What I was trying to say is that for best response time you should try outside of the peak hours. When I post from home in the evenings the performance of the software is quite acceptable. If you got to work early and tried it first thing in the morning (since you’re on the East Coast), I would guess that the response time would be much faster than after, say, 10 or 11 AM Eastern Time.

Arnold is correct. I’m also in the eastern time zone and I find the board quite speedy before about 9am. In fact, since about 3pm today I’ve seen a bit of improvement, too.

There’s also a router in the Chicago area that has been completely dead since last Thursday; this can’t be helping the situation.

and right now it is taking less than 2 seconds for page loads. Wonderful!

Here on the East Coast I can only access the board before 11 am. After 11 it takes too long to load or the error messages prevent access.

At least I’m getting a lot of work done now.

There seemed to be a pickup in speed yesterday right around 5 pm ET.

It’s zipping right along for now :keeping fingers crossed:

Thank you, techs, for your hard work.

Yes, everyone log in at 5pm ET now.

Report:

It is exactly 12:33 EDT, and the site is performing well.

At approximately 11:00 AM MDT today (7-12-2000, 17:00 GMT) the boards were taken down for maintenance. Prior to that time, the boards were crawling. As of approximately 1:00 PM MDT today (19:00 GMT), the boards are back up and loading near-instantaneously, during what is still usually peak hours. I’ve no clue what was done during that maintenance period, but THANK YOU!!! It worked!

It took me 40 seconds to access the SDMB just now. Most of that time was used by my own server. It took 7 seconds to access ATMB.
The Techs at SDMB are hearby awarded one ATTABOY.
