Sabado Gigante is ending

You’ve run into that epically long variety show on the Spanish station on Saturday nights, haven’t you? Well it’s called Sabado Gigante, and it’s going off the air after 53 years.

This saddens me so much. I’ve never sat down and watched it but it was always on Saturday afrternoons when I was little. And it was always on forever even if I didn’t watch. I wonder why. From what I understand the ratings aren’t bad.

Que lastima!

I love this show. I, tragically, don’t get reception on Univision. But, I watch it any Saturday I can.

It’s comedy skits.

It’s musical guests, including Shakira and Psy.

It’s paternity tests.

It’s re unions of long lost family members.

It’s a singing competition.

It’s so very much more!
I adore Sabado Gigante!

¡Ay, caramba! It’s older than Doctor Who.

Esta Noche?

Hosted by Don Francisco all 53 years! Aplausos for that guy.

I never liked Sabado Gigante. I liked Siempre en Domingo.

I disliked the format of SG, and they used to have this panel of children who answered questions like they were groomed and coached by obnoxious parents, making them in turn, extremely obnoxious. It just seemed to me that they never got to the performances, unlike Siempre en Domingo, which was all about the performances.

Now, in somesouthwestern markets, you may have gotten to know Jonny Canales and his show. Now that was an amazing show. Selena started on it, its very Tex Mex and his signature, “Take it away!” catchphrase made Jonny Canales a superb showman.

Why not both?

I thought Don Francisco would never quit, would stay there and then become immortal.

You mean I’ve been watching Maury Povich when I didn’t have to?

From the limited times I watched, it seemed to occasionally have some risque content for a family show.

Reminder that the final show is this Saturday, and it’s going out with a bang.

I don’t speak Spanish and I’m not fond of Mexican music, but I liked keeping it on in the background for the gratuitous and copious T&A.

Don Francisco’s farewell letter is freaking awesome:

I have loved this show since I first saw it. I have spent many Saturday afternoons watching it at home, at friends’ houses and at local restaurants & taquerias.

I don’t even speak Español and I love this show.

Where’s the crying emoji? I need a crying emoji.

I’m shocked. I don’t speak Spanish and have only seen the show in clips, but I knew of Sabado Gigante as one of those bedrocks of television. It’s like hearing that “Saturday Night Live” is being canceled - you just assume it will always be there. :frowning:
