Long story short, the Monsignor allowed her to film a video in his church. The diocese didn’t like this idea, investigated, and uncovered possible financial irregularities. I know it’s an old story, but I thought it was interesting. If it needs to be moved to a better place, of course feel free.

In a statement to the outlet, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop Robert Brennan said, “I am saddened to share that investigations conducted by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP have uncovered evidence of serious violations of Diocesan policies and protocols at Our Lady of Mount Carmel – Annunciation Parish.
I find this surprising: I would have expected the Diocese to have auditors and investigators on their staff–instead of spending big bucks for external lawyers.
But isn’t the point of auditing the need to be separate from the - seemingly well-entrenched - corruption going on? Given that the Catholic Church is as likely to promote or transfer someone known to have conducted a crime as to fire them or dob them into the authorities, there’s no surety that any internal employee is squeaky clean or able to deliver a disinterested audit.
And, in the interest of natural justice, perhaps the money was only resting in his account.
She’s a fairly highly rated pop singer these days. Makes music vids that use her considerable youthful vigor and beauty (read “sex appeal”) to good advantage. Not an obvious good fit for a Catholic church.
