Safari 6.0

I have the Safari 6.0 upgrade, and so I have a question.

(Incidentally, I don’t like that the URL box and the Google box are the same box now. I liked them separate.)

I clicked on a link in SDMB. The link appeared to open in the same window, instead of in a new window. But that’s not what seems to have happened. It seems that the SDMB window closed and a new window opened at the link in the same screen position as the SDMB window. So there was no back button to get back to SDMB.

How can I fix this, so that the link opens in a new window and the existing window doesn’t close?

Oh, wait… It opens the link in a new tab. Since I rarely use tabs, I didn’t notice it. So how do I open links in a new window?

Yeah the tab situation is different now. Instead of small, tidy tabs, the tabs are super long. Its not a huge deal but a little annoying especially if you keep the browser window open really wide like I do.

I do have to say I like how the one search window thing is working. have you had any trouble with it?

No trouble with it, but I like to type things into a separate search box if only to do a quick spell-check. Also: With 5.7 I could browse all I want to, and my search string is still in the search box. Since the URL and search are in the same box now, that can’t happen.

I love the combined URL/search field. Something they lifted off of Chrome, which I’d been using much more as of late. I installed Mountain Lion and i’m back to using Safari now; seems less chunky and more responsive again.

Also, as for the tabs, I think if you’re on a laptop, or have that standalone trackpad thing, you can do a pinch gesture and all your tabs shrink down into a swipeable showcase thingamajigger.

Where does the cursor/arrow have to be to pinch the tabs to make them smaller? That might be cool.

I didn’t think about losing your search string. That is a good point. Of course once you start typing in the previous search, you can select it from the drop down… but that is alot more work. You might have to start opening new tabs for each selection off a google serach list to maintain the initial google search.

If you don’t like tabs, you can change this behavior in the Safari preferences. Open them up, click on the “Tabs” tab, and change “Open pages in tabs instead of windows” to ‘never’.

Perfect! Thanks!

I also don’t care for the combined URL/search box. It breaks web standards, where typing a bogus server name is supposed to result in “Safari can’t find the server at nosuchserver.com”.

But my biggest gripe is taking away RSS support. It was the only feature Safari had that was head and shoulders above anyone else. I hate the way Mail handles RSS, and I do not want to have to use a separate RSS reader.

I just typed in a URL (errantly) a couple hours ago, adding a .com manually, and it brought me to the typical “Safari can’t find this server” page.

Once you successfully browse to a URL, it’ll remember and offer it as a top option once you begin typing it, and will usually make it the default entry, then you just hit return.

As far as dropping the RSS, I’ve never utilized it, so I don’t miss it. If you install NewsNetWire, I think Safari will automatically launch your feeds through that. However, I think I read somewhere, some developer is working on an RSS extension for Safari 6. And due to the outcry, it and others will probably show up soon.

I typed something into the single box today, expecting Google results. Instead it took me to a web page. I specifically did not want to go to a web page, but to see results of the search.

Something else I noticed about Safari 6.0 recently: It does not display a URL when searching Google images. That is, I’ll do a search. Then I click on Images. I get a page of images. If I want to link to the page of images, I don’t see a way to do it. I have to open Firefox, repeat the search, and then I have the URL that I can C&P.

I don’t like how the search term stays in the Safari address field instead of the URL either, but here’s a bit of a work around.

After you enter the search term, right-click on Images instead of single clicking. Then click on Copy Link. Then you can paste that link wherever you want. It should be the same URL that brings up all the pretty pictures.
