Safari browser question: where's the grey bar at the bottom?

On my old Mac, when I use Safari there’s a grey bar at the bottom that shows the progress of loading, and at the bottom right there’s a little icon for re-sizing the window, plus a screen scroller on the right hand side.

That’s all missing on my new Mac.

How come?

The OS has changed since you last updated on your old Mac, is my guess.

Loading now shows as a blue line in the URL address window, beneath the text.

Resizing is done by grabbing an edge and dragging it, or grabbing a corner and thus dragging two edges.

The scroller indicator now “hides” itself when the page is stationary; it will appear as you scroll up or down.

Note that this can (usually) be done with any edge or corner of the window, rather than just the lower right as in previous versions. So this is something of an improvement; it’s a lot easier, for example, to precisely resize a window that’s you want to keep on the right-hand side or at the bottom of your screen.

This is indeed the default behavior, but you can get the scroll bars to show at all times if you want. Select “System Preferences…” from the Apple menu, go to the “General” panel, and change “Show Scroll Bars:” to “Always”.

What version of Safari were you running that had the progress bar at the bottom?

Maybe you’re thinking of the status bar, which is where a URL address will appear when you hover over a link? If that’s what you’re looking for, in the Safari menu bar go to View > Show Status Bar.
