I like the SAG awards. They seem much less about studios making money and much more about actual artistic achievements in acting. Much less about outfits and more about performances and genuine feelings. The films, shows and actors nominated were interesting and lots of them were out of the mainstream.
Did you watch tonight’s SAG awards show? The other things I like are that they don’t show the red carpet before the show, they don’t shut down people accepting and speaking too long with lame music, they show clips of meaningful length for every award, and yet the whole thing seemed to move along at a nice clip.
I have one trivial inconsequential question: why did Ashton Kutcher look different from what I remember? Was it just his hairstyle, or his face filling out as he gets a little older? I did not recognize him until he spoke.
I watched and enjoyed it as usual. As one who is very interested in the fashion aspect, I thought overall everyone looked better than at the Golden Globes. There is in fact a whole red carpet extravaganza, though it is broadcast on a different channel (E!).
It was a little more political than I care for (though I was expecting it) and I imagine some of our Trump supporters suffered apoplexy, if indeed any were watching.
I’ve only seen Florence Foster Jenkins and Girl on the Train and maybe a third of the nominated TV selections so it’s hard to comment on whether the winners would have been my choice.
Orange is the New Black won for the third year in a row for comedy.
Comedy.
The Emmys wised up and made a rule to exclude such shows from the comedy category. Unfortunately it was based on run time (half hour vs. hour) rather than, you know, actually being a comedy.
The only real contender in the comedy cast category was Veep. It should have won in a landslide.
My favorite thing is to look at the fashion slide shows online the day after these awards things. I believe the SAG slideshow was the first time I didn’t recognize the names (let alone the faces) of any but about two people.
Do you think The Girl on the Train is worth seeing? I read the book and kind of liked it, but wondered how the multiple points of view would translate to the screen. (Did you also read the book? If so, before or after the movie?)
It’s funny you ask. When I saw it in the theater I got distracted wondering how it looked to anyone who had not read the book. I ate that book up like candy and went to see it in spite of its less than stellar reviews. If nothing else, Emily Blunt’s performance is outstanding and it’s worth watching just for that. Anyway, I watched it again over the weekend with someone who had not read the book or in fact knew much of anything about it. He thought it was ok but found it very slow and a bit hard to follow and I have to agree with him. If you’re someone that gets confused when two actors look similar it might irritate you that the two wives look quite a bit alike.
Interesting. I actually listened to the audiobook while on my walks. Three different women spoke the three women’s parts, and it was very hard to tell them apart! I do plan to watch it. Thanks!
Orange is the New Black has runtimes between 50 and 90 minutes.
It up to the producers to declare whether something is a comedy or a drama. Shows that have both elements can be difficult to categorize, but I don’t see a problem here.
I don’t have any issues with OITNB being labeled as a comedy. There are certainly tragic elements and themes throughout the show - but there are plenty of comedic elements as well. Not everything needs to have a laugh track.
What’s the confusion? It’s no longer eligible for the comedy category for Emmys. But for the wrong reason. The Emmys saw a problem. (There were a lot of complaints.) And they fixed it. Sort of. Now a long format comedy won’t be allowed in.
Any show that routinely contains beatings, rapes and the occasional murder isn’t that much of a comedy. The humorous bits in OITNB are very few. Whole episodes have no humor at all. Even Louis doesn’t push things this far.
Sure, let the producers submit it in any category they want. It’s the voters who are being stupid to go along with it. Why on Earth do they nominate and then choose a show that is clearly not a comedy???
It’s like how the female lead of some movies get put up for supporting actress thinking that this will increase the chances of getting an Oscar. Voters are stupid and fall for it.
