salsa with celery?

I just realized the can of diced tomatoes I bought for salsa has tomatoes plus green peppers and celery.

Think it’s at all plausible to use this in a salsa?

Other ingredients would include cilantro, garlic, salt, and jalapenos.

Hell yes, celery (in decent size chunks, not blended mush) would add a nice crunch to your salsa.

This is going to be blended mush I’m afraid. So we’re talking about flavor, rather than texture.

But if celery is good in chunks due to its texture, I think I can infer from this that celery’s taste is not detrimental to the flavor of a salsa.

To be honest the peppers tend to overwhelm when I make salsa, and I like celery anyway, so caveat emptor and all that.

I don’t think I can recommend using a leek in a salsa though. I was the only one who liked it.

The celery in the processed tomatoes will not make a very noticeable flavor impact. The cooked celery will have a much different flavor profile stewed with the tomatoes and green peppers and be negligible in volume and muted in a salsa with other fresh ingredients. It may give it a slightly richer taste, if anything. The jalapenos and cilantro will overpower any tinge of cooked celery, regardless.

I probably wouldn’t add fresh celery to a salsa, however.

The fresh flavor of celery and its crunchy texture wouldn’t seem quite right to me with the sharp, acidic, and rich flavors of salsa… or at least not regular chip dip salsa. I might add celery to a salsa if it were used as a garnish to fish or other meats as a fresh pico de gallo ie. in a Mexican style shrimp cocktail, or maybe with tacos cabritos.

But if you like the taste of fresh celery, enjoy its texture and think it would go great in a salsa, then by all means go for it. Eat what you like, not what seems right.

I put celery salt in my salsa and I think it adds wonderful flavor. But then again I also add a little corn to my salsa so maybe I’m just weird.

Is it celery stalk or seed that’s added? Celery seed actually has a spicy flavor of its own, which would probably go very well in some salsa recipes.

Sounds like you bought stewed tomatoes, and I use them for almost everything. They won’t harm the flavor of salsa one bit, IM(NSH)O.
