Salty licorice????

The shop where I buy coffee carries a variety of imported candies so I usually treat myself to good licorice when I stock up on coffee. Today, they were out of the brand I usually buy. I’d seen packages of salty licorice but didn’t try any until today. I like licorice; I love salty things - should have been a good deal. Wasn’t.

So now I have this $2.50 package of salty licorice with one piece gone - and I’ll never eat another.

Euro-dopers: what’s the deal with this stuff? I don’t understand it at all.

I absolutely love it. Its tought to find up here. Double-Zout (or some damn thing) is the kind I usually get.

Definetly an aquired taste.

Good ol’ Dutch licorice. The double salted stuff is quite strong. Good for sore thoats, or that eye opening shock to the system. It does take a bit of getting used to.

I don’t want to sound like a “stick-in the-mud”, but licorice, the real stuff at least, can cause high blood pressure. If salted, I’d expect that licorice’s tendency to raise the blood pressure would be even more pronounced. So, be careful if you’ve got high blood pressure or related health conditions.

Americans don’t really appreciate, in general, strong salty flavors.

My wife thought li hing mui was repulsive.

Salted licorice… hard to find… and worth it. I used to eat it like, uh, candy when I was at college.

It is very popular here in Sweden. Wrigleys even do a Salty Licorice chewing gum.

'tis the work of the devil if you ask me.

I’m Dutch, but I must have missed the gene for appreciating this stuff. I usually like strong-flavored things, and love salty things, but can’t deal with it. Then again, I don’t like licorice much, so that could be the problem. You can send it to my family though. Is is Druppe’s?

I’m amazed at the response to this.

The stuff I bought today is from Sweden. I’d have to agree that it certainly must be an acquired taste.

The sweet stuff I usually get is from Holland but looks as though it’s labeled by the US distributor.

I rarely eat sweets. All my snacking tends to be salty so I was surprised that I didn’t like this stuff. The licorice flavor was very weak so it was like having an off-tasting salt.

BTW, Karl my blood pressure hovers around 114/64.

I bought a small package of the chile-flavored salted plums, from Mexico.

I spit for a week!

I love licorice!
I was in a candy shop recently and saw “Double Salted Licorice.”
I thought, this must be the really good stuff, so I bought some.
Yow! It was horrible! 2 weeks later and I’m still trying to forget the taste!
Why would anyone want to acquire a taste for this?

Is ‘li hing mui’ a euphemism for something?

Bad Candy used to have a review of Double Zout on their site, but the URL doesn’t seem to be working now. Hope they haven’t disappeared…
