Sam Roberts?

Anybody here heard of Sam Roberts? He’s a musician from Canada.

He plays rock and roll.

He loves rock and roll.

If you haven’t heard his stuff, it’s really good! I have his new cd and I think it’s released in the USA on the 17th.

You might want to check him out.

I hear (or read) the name Sam Roberts, and it causes my brain to start singing…

“Don’t walk away¸ Eileen!
I was living for you since the age of seventeen!
Don’t walk away, Eileen!
You’ve been living a lie and now it’s time to come clean!”

I will have this song stuck in my head all night long now!

Not that I’m complaining too much. I like his other two songs that I’ve heard, and I am thinking of buying the CD (if only to hear “Eileen” more often and not feel quilty about burning it!) I tried to win concert tickets once, but my cell phone didn’t turn on fast enough for me to dial in and try and get them!

Yeah, his three singles rock! “Don’t Walk Away Eileen” is probably the strongest, but “Where Have All The Good People Gone?” is coming into it’s own.

Trust me, buy the CD. The rest of the album is just as good.

The songs “Taj Mahal” and “On The Run” are my favourites right now.

Cheers.

He’s excellent and beautiful.

Have I heard? I can’t stop hearing him.

He’s my favorite new artist. I didn’t buy his first 6 song cd, simply because I have issues paying $14 bucks for six songs. Mostly, because I’m next to broke. His new full length release is top on my to buy list though. Gonna get it this weekend!

Plus, he has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. Drool.

I think he’s got a bright future. He’s playing the MMVA’s, whenever those are.

Watch out, jb! If he’s really good, he might become a billionaire.

Yeah, but the upside is his songs are about not turning your back on your fellow humans. Need I cite “Brother Down”?

Good.

Indeed, not a more deserving artist out there. I would’ve bought “The Inhuman Condition”, if it were not full priced as Emperor Penguin said. It may have to do with him being a (then) minor artist when he released it and not being able to press as many copies. The MMVA’s are the MuchMusic Video Awards, MuchMusic being the canadian equivalent to MTV, which honors canadian(and international artists, but not as much) artists.

Unfortunately, over here in BC he is getting way over exposed, like the BC band Nickelback did when they hit the big time in Canada and the USA. Played at least once an hour on every alt station(which is about three), which works perfectly with his three released single. Not that he doesn’t need the publicity, but continual listening of something again and again causes it to become boring and annoying.

Yeah, that’s why I don’t listen to the radio (unless it’s an 80’s retro station, in which case I pray to hear Boston’s “More than a feeling”, the perfect car rockin’ out song!)

nitpick: Nickelback is an Alberta band.

Oh yes, and Sam Roberts = good.

Nickelback did get played out very quickly. Talk about a flash in the pan!

True, but in Alberta they were not much more than a cover band, and in Vancouver, they took off. They had released “Curb” in '96, and “Hesher” earlier in the same year, both of which were not huge hits, to say the least. In March of 2000, “The State” was released, and it was their break out album. Prior to this though, in 1999, they released a song on the “Vancouver Seeds 1999” CD, which is a CD produced by a local rock station (CFOX) featuring as of yet, unheard of, local talent. Theirs was one of the singles, and it took off like wildfire. So, while the do come from Hanna, Alta., they got their first major exposure as a band in BC, as well as recording most, if not all, of their original music there as well. Due to this, I would consider them a BC band. Of course, I don’t really care for them all that much, so this is a moot point. I was in Vancouver though when they just started to hit the big time, and they always acted like they were a Vancouver band. The first mention I’ve ever heard about them being from Alberta was when you mentioned it actually. www.Allmusic.com does back up the Alberta bit though.

I always figured the first album was, like you say, an indie release. Essentially him just testing the water to see if he could develop a significant fan base. It worked and he did, and he released a full length album soon after on the Universal label… I believe “The Inhuman Condition” was released by Maplemusic, a smaller, Canadian label

The problem with these new good bands is that most of the other bands “new” stuff is rehashed old material, and when we do get a good band that’s good at what it does, they play the same [good] songs over and over and over gain. Quite repetitive. And as I said before, the more you get exposed it seems the more ire you draw, such as people saying the music sucks, it’s overhyped plabum, they sold out.

I don’t understand the rationale behind peoples concept of selling out. They seem to think that the lead vocalist needs to be serving people breakfast at dennys to be able to also finance the band, instead of them actually selling more records and being able to live without day jobs.

Also, a little side note, Emperor Penguin: IIRC, Roberts states in a interview the very first originials(that he sold) of The Inhuman Condition were on burnt cds copied from Robert’s mp3s he made of the recording because he couldn’t afford to make a “real” cd.

Hah, wow, this is an old thread.
I don’t know what the rules are about resurrecting threads on the new board, but since a feature of the new board is that I can search for and pin a topic on my profile, I decided to see if there was anything about Sam Roberts.
Been loving his music for a while now. He’s released a lot of music since 2003 when this thread seems to have been made.
(Hey, it says 17 YEARS LATER at the top of my post. So you know this is a zombie thread.)

I saw the date “Jun 03” on the posts, so I thought they were 3 weeks old. Oops, missed the apostrophe.

I have heard “Brother Down” about a million times. It’s a good song, but I think I got oversaturated at one point.
