Just curious . . . do you wave at the driver of the exact same car as you? The make, year, and model, and color have everything to do with it. More obscure cars are more wave-worthy.
My 2001 Silver Olds Alero . . . to common/uninteresting. No waves.
Renting a 2000 Chrysler Sebring Convertible, white . . . same applies, but I think I’m going to start waving anyway. I’m going to convert some drivers into wavers with my goodwill.
Yes, they do. Saturn tried to get that ball rolling too but to no avail. I have a Honda Element and due to the fact that I don’t see a huge number of them, I feel compelled to wave to other Elly drivers. I refrain. (I have had other’s approach me though and ask me how I like it and what I’ve managed to haul in it. To date I wow everyone with the fact that my partner and I can haul both of our 9.5 foot kayaks in it. )
Yeah, we Jeep driver do to some extent. Generally not so much at the obvious soccer mom in a Grand Cherokee, but if it is obvious that you use it for the intended Jeep purpose, than yeah.
I thought it was more of a Wrangler thing anyway. My partner has one and only waves at other Wrangler drivers. It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand.
Saab 92-x, yes wave and get waved at. But the car is fairley rare, and most likely everyone who has one in this area also chats on the Saab 92-x message board.
I give thumbs up to anyone driving a well kept old/classic car, do others do that?
Interesting. My husband drives a Sebring convertible, and I drive a Jeep Liberty. Neither of us does this, and I have never noticed anyone waving at me when I’m driving either car (there are A LOT of Liberties on the road…I’d be waving all day long!)
Most Land Rover owners wave to each other, especeially poeple driving the older models. People in new Freelanders, Range Rover sports and Discovery III’s seem to be oblivious to this culture, but these cars are also in price range that could imply people with different attitudes to their cars. I remember waiting for a red light to go green, singing “I like trafficlights” to myself, when a black RR sport stopped next to me. I saw a Land Rover and waved and honked to the driver. He on the other hand looked terrifed at me and as soon as the light got green, he sped away like I was some kind of axe murderer. If it was my shaggy unshaven looks in a dark grey muddy Defender that scared him or that he just didn’t know that we were supposed to aknowledge each other that totally spooked him, I never got to know. Anyway, the green light was on long enough for me to cross the intersection
And I don’t blame them, considering the non-rugged folks I have seen driving them (folks like me, in fact!) We DO take it off-road on occasion, so we have the full off-road package, so despite the fact that I really wanted it to make it easier to get the baby in & out of the car, I’m not a complete suburban doofus!
Loosely related to the OP - when I moved south from the midwest, part of my culture shock was that absolutely anyone that makes eye contact with you will give you a howdy-do, including people in cars opposite you at a stop light. LOVE it that a stranger in a car will tip a hat to you while you wait for the green.
I rarely notice what other cars are. I notice if they are in my way, or if they will be in the way, and don’t really look to see what kind of car they are.
No, but I drive a Focus hatchback. I do, however, point out the other car to any passengers I may have, as tell them how everyone else is starting to realize what a wonderful city car the Focus is (and now American made!). I’m a big fan of my little car (obviously) so I do keep an eye out for his cousins.
Unless I was driving a 30 year old classic, I can’t imagine waving in a car. But I ride motorcycles and they almost always wave if you notice each other, ragardless of the make.
I drive a PT Cruiser, and I don’t wave. But I never see one exactly like mine, either (red with a silverish-grey racing stripe). We’ve seen a blue one with the same racing stripe, though.
There are a LOT of PT Cruisers around here, though. If I waved to all of them, I’d never stop.
Yep. I’ve been driving a Subaru Imprezza for almost 6 months now and so far every single Imprezza I’ve seen on the road has waved to me. I love it. I get excited and scare my wife with shouts of, “Look - LOOK! He’s waving! And his is an STi!”
