Same-sex marriage will have no negative impact on American society as a whole

Magellan Good luck with this one, you are on your own. ‘Fact based’ in this case is obviously just a ploy, nobody cares about fact based because there are no facts to base anything on. It represents one of the most radical shifts in all of history and some people want to downplay that. The argument that marriage has already been thoroughly debased is compelling and one that I agree with. Marriage at this point really means quite little in our society. People can get married and easily have it annulled or get a divorce. It’s a bit harder to get a divorce, but it’s not hard. I predict that gay couples just like straight couples will get married in a fit of passion and get divorced when they are bored.

Marriage as a social institution is already meaningless and devoid of content. People who are prone to monogamy will be monogamous, married or not. Our society has little respect for the institution of marriage anymore anyway. But that all started with Henry VIII, it didn’t start any time recently. Reagan put a cap on it with the first no-fault divorce laws.

These threads are not about debate and I admire your pluck in attempting to wade through the pile-on, but this topic is one that this message board considers settled and most people think you are evil if you oppose it. So basically, it’s about the prurient interest of people to engage in herd behavior by agreeing with each other that they are better people than those who think differently.

Enough!

There is a separate thread that addresses the question of this thread’s OP without the personal baggage, A question for opponents of gay marriage.
There is a separate thread in the Pit where all the personal baggage one could desire may be hashed out: What bad things might happen if same-sex couples get married?

This thread has no useful purpose.
