Samsung smart TV connectivity question

I wish to purchase Samsung LED TV UA32D5900VR.

  1. Is there a way to connect it to internet and use a wireless keyboard to surf, like I do with my PC? If yes, what do I need as additional hardware?

My search does not give me a conclusive answer on this.

  1. Also how is internet experience in these TVs? I am sure many dopers own these smart LED TVs.
    Thanks in advance.

I recently bought a Toshiba Smart TV but I don’t actually have the wireless dongle for it yet. As I understand it, though, you can’t get full internet access in the way you describe it - you have a “walled garden” of sites you can access, e.g. Facebook, YouTube and, here in the UK, BBC iPlayer and other on-demand video services. I could be wrong though as I haven’t looked into it fully.

  1. The tv has a wifi network card so you search for wifi networks, select your network, enter the WEP or WPA key and you are connected! You can also use wired connection if you prefer.

Although the TV has several USB ports, they are for connecting hard drives and flash drives, you can’t connect a keyboard or mouse there. You can use your standard remote for navigation, but it is very slow to respond and it is frustrating.

But if you have a smartphone or tablet you can use the Samsung Remote app (it is also available for Apple devices). This app has all the buttons of your standard remote control, plus a navigation mode where you can use the touchscreen as a touchpad for your tv. Also whenever you enter in a text field in the browser, the smartphone’s default keyboard pops up on the screen so you can type, like you would type an SMS for example.

In my opinion this is the best way to use the browser, because the standard remote sucks.
2)The whole experience is lacking in my opinion. Although the browser renders the pages correctly, even flash ones, it is kinda slow and you have to wait until the page has loaded completely before you can navigate. If there’s a popup in the page, it will steal focus and you have to wait until it fully loads before you can close it. So it is a kinda slow and frustrating process.

Most major sites have their own Samsung TV app, so you can browse these sites through the app, not the browser. which makes things a bit better.

But in my opinion the best thing is to connect a computer to the TV and browse the internet through that.

You mean a wired connection? I have wi-fi at home for use in my laptop and a wired connection for PC.

I would like to use my laptop keyboard, and use TV as a big screen.

Dog80 means to take your laptop or PC and connect it to one of your TV’s display inputs, HDMI, DVI, whatever. Then your TV would just be an external monitor and everything else you do would be connected to the laptop or PC - whichever you connected to your television.

In that case you don’t need to use the Smart TV capabilities at all - just connect your laptop to the TV. If you don’t want wires trailing across the room then I believe there are ways to connect wirelessly - this sort of thing is the first one I found on a quick Google.

Sorry.

I was hoping for full internet functionality (including wireless keyboard)in the TV. Since that is not the case, I thought of using the TV as a monitor.

Still hoping that a new version of Samsung TV will have full Internet without hooking to a laptop.

The D models are last years - perhaps in your region you’ll see some new (E) models very soon. I’m guessing from the model code you’re referring to you’re not in the US.

As an example here’s a 2012 Smart TV from the US site: http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN60ES6100FXZA

These new models should be coming out in India (where I think you’re located) over the next months so keep an eye out. I know some of them support a wireless keyboard.

There may be a way to connect a wireless keyboard (probably Bluetooth), depending on the model. The remote for my UN55D7000 has a small wireless keyboard on the back that has to be paired with the set during initial setup.

It’s not described in the manual as a Bluetooth connection, but I suspect it is, especially since other aspects of the set’s behavior (power on via Samsung Remote App, 3D goggle shutter sync) are handled through BT.

Thanks. They are expensive though.:frowning:

I need a 32" TV. Will keep an eye on this.

We just bought an older model Samsung HDTV around New Year’s, but opted not to go with the Smart TV version because it was so limited; it didn’t have a full browser and the in-store display was tedious to use.

My husband wanted to set up a MythTV PVR anyways, so we have the TV plugged into a standard computer tower (dedicated, largely due to the configuration of our house) and we can use the internet that way. We bought a VisionTek Candyboardto use as a keyboard for when we are using the PVR or internet, and it’s pretty awesome. Bonus: built-in laser pointer for the cats!

If you want a full browser on your phone, the Logitech Revue is on sale today for $74:
