San Andreas- the movie starring The Rock

Has anyone else seen this? I went because my friend really wanted to see it and it seemed like stupid fun, and I’m so glad I went. It was ridiculous in the best way. There were so many things that defied science or just logic. Possibly my favorite thing was how The Rock dealt with the tsunami coming in. Also, he took his helicopter to save his wife (defying his job orders where to go), and he gets out of the pilot seat, pushes a HOV button, and goes back to the main part of the helicopter so he can lower down a basket for her to jump on, and me and my friend turned to each other and go “wait, no one else is flying the helicopter? It’s hovering on it’s own?” I’m not a helicopter expert, but that doesn’t seem right.

There were some things I genuinely liked about it. The Rock is great like always. The daughter wasn’t just the damsel in distress, she did get rescued more than once, but she also helped others and wasn’t useless. There was a kid, but I kinda liked him, he wasn’t annoying like some kids in disaster movies where you are hoping they die.

Anyway, it’s not a strong recommend, definitely go see Mad Max first if you haven’t seen it yet. But it’s goofy fun. I read one review that called it the best comedy of the year, which is an accurate review.

I won’t see it at the Theater, but I’ll be first in line when it comes up for rental at the Library - I love movies like this!

I was talking to a friend about this and described it similarly to your opinion. I think it’s a great summer popcorn movie. You can’t really pay attention to the story because it has lots of holes, but the special effects are great. Ok, the situations they get into are a bit  unbelievable, and the amount of “coincidence” strains credulity a little. Ok, a lot. But did I mention the special effects?

Surprisingly, (as I’ve mentioned in a previous thread) Dwayne Johnson’s acting is getting to be better. Not great, yet, but believable.

And as for how he dealt with the tsunami coming in, I thought that was plausible. The thing they conveniently ignored is that a tsunami isn’t just 1 wave. there are (usually? I’m not an expert) several.

So turn off your brain and look at all the pretty special effects, and you’ll have a good time.

J.

Saw it with my wife. Good summer movie. Gossamer-thin plot, rife with impossible situations, just what I like. Actually, there was too much plot and character development.

Big dumb disaster movies with wonky science are a guilty pleasure of mine, so of course I saw it. It doesn’t displace ‘The Core’ for first place in the category, but definitely worth the price of admission.

Did anyone else think it was too bad that…

…Daniel didn’t survive to be reunited with Emma. That would’ve been a much funnier scene than a shipping container landing on him. Or a post credits scene revealing he’s alive, but trapped under rouble that isn’t going to be excavated for a few decades or centuries.

yep -

The other comment I made was that

they should have just stayed in the damn building to begin with

Laughed many times at the absurdity of it all - it was hilarious in ways I don’t think was intended.

I saw it, in 3-D no less. Great stupid fun; doesn’t bear much scrutiny afterwards, though.

I was, however, impressed by what a charismatic leading man Dwayne Johnson is turning into.

Just what should one do if you’re on a boat and a sunami is inbound? Don’t need answer fast.
