San Francisco dodges Olympic bullet!

As a Bay Area resident, I know I didn’t want to put up with the hideous traffic that accompanies an Olympics (as if traffic weren’t bad enough here already). Of course, I don’t know if I’ll even be living here in 10 years, but just in case I am, I’m glad that New York won the bid competition.

As an added bonus, one of the leaders of the San Francisco bid team, Anne Cribbs, was a real ass to me once, so I can rejoice in the disappointment she’s feeling.

Good on you. I’m still pissed Baltimore/D.C didn’t get the bid, we were the only place among the finalists where it wouldn’t have been hugely disruptive to life. It’s gonna be hell in NYC.

Oh thank God.

Even though I was likely to get a nice bundle of cash doing an animation for the post-Olympics use of the proposed stadium, seriously, I’m so much happier without my
S.F. side-street clogged with commuters, and my beloved (and relatively unknown) corner coffee shop unmolested with tourists.

Does anyone else besides me think that

A) Holding the Olympics in NYC is an insanely stupid idea what with the monumental security/traffic problems that would come along with the Olympics
and
B) That NYC got the bid due in very VERY large part to sympathy for the 9/11 attacks?

do it to NY, do it to NY…

(SF’s mantra)

Well yes, that goes without saying. There haven’t been massive protests because no one here is really taking the concept seriously.

This ISN’T really going to happen, is it? I mean, how many fucking Olympics have been held in the U.S. over the past twenty years? Eighty percent or something like that? Let Botswana have their turn.

I still like what one commentator said should be done with the Olympics: Make it like the World Cup (i.e. spread it out over a period of time, like a month, and have the various events scattered throughout the host country), that way the locals of a host city aren’t overwhelmed by invasions of las touristas, plus it would make it easier to add events to the games (though, I’m not sure if that’s a good idea, I mean, I can’t understand for the life of me what makes syncronized swimming an Olympic event), and it would make it easier for broadcasters to cover events live.

Tuckerfan:

That’s kinda why I think Balto/D.C was the only place that made logistic sense- two cities, 3 states. These events up here, those events down there, water stuff on the bay, mass transit in place… It would have worked, damnit!

NOOOOOOOOOOO

I don’t think New York will get it. That would be insane.
Go Russia!

No, you’re not the only one who thinks this.

New York can’t pull it off without New Jersey’s help I mean where are the football stadiums NY uses? New Jersey! I know we will get the short end of the stick again so I hope for 2012 the US does not get it.

We don’t even have enough water for the people who are here so how would they expect us to have water for that amount of people? Im talking about Monterey, California, next to Fort Ord, where they wanted to do the horse thing.

Im with those who think NY was an emotional decision.

I’m with those who don’t want the Olympics held anywhere in the U.S., period.

As a cheapskate U.S. taxpayer I resent having had to pay all that money for construction and security at the Salt Lake City Olympics, let alone paying the freight for what those things would cost in NYC. The word boon-doggle ought to be attached to the Olympic flag.

I plead and pray that the voters in NYC and NY state, and NJ if it comes to that, vote against hosting the Olympic games.

Glad I’m not alone. I’ve been rooting for us to LOSE this bid for months. What a traffic nightmare for one thing; they claim there’d be a bunch of highway and transit improvements in order to accomodate everyone, but they should be doing that ANYWAY - for the people who actually have to LIVE HERE!

That’s exactly what I thought too, voguevixen. “Oh, so we DON’T get road improvements anyway?”

As someone who lives next door to Kezar Stadium, I was having nightmares about them holding some smaller event there. ::shudder::

Hooray!!

Ditto. My wife and I were trying to imagine where they would hold all the competitions without having to build additional facilities or venues. We couldn’t do it (not unless you spread it really wide out). The traffic would’ve been a mess and given how much it costs to get as far as they did, it doesn’t sound like it’ll happen anytime soon at all now.

Good.

I think the chaos would have been fun. But i’m not sure i’ll be here in ten years (just like 2 years ago i’d laugh if you said i’d be living here)

After seeing some olympic cities. I have to say I welcome it. NYC’s infrasturcture is aging and overburdened. The Olympic is just the kick in the pants NYC needs to get the 2nd ave subway, west side stadium, LIRR into grand central & downtown, Metro north extended to downtown, rebuilding path, rebuild the WTC complex (however) so the E train that still says WTC has a WTC to actually go to, movable sidewalks, pedestrian express elevated walkways, for that matter extend the LIE (rt 495) to link up with the lincon tunnel via expressway, put a dome over the whole city and shove in a big A/C on the Jersey side.

And unlike other cities that have built up for the olympics and then couldn’t support the infrasturcture once the games left, NYC can and will use them.

Other plus (for me) - rent out my house for the 2 weeks (or whatever) for big bucks and spend that time in my vacation house far away from all the traffic.

Yea, New York City wins! Congratulations.
