I’m thinking of trying the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey and was wondering if anyone here had read it. Basically, Audible came back and said if I liked the Harry Dresden series I’d like this one, so that’s the only recommendation I have thus far. The books themselves got mixed reviews from the folks who listened to it, but I’ve found that this doesn’t always track with my own tastes, since often books I hated get high reviews, while ones I liked don’t (or the reviewers are talking more about the voice reader and not the story, or vice versa).
So, I thought I’d check out 'doper views on it before taking the plunge. I don’t ‘need answer fast’, though I’m preping for another trip next week so if I like what I hear I’ll download the series to my iPhone before the trip. If not, well, I have some other Sci-Fi in my queue I can download to listen to on the various planes, trains and automobiles I’ll be sentenced too.
Yes, it’s a fine series of supernatural noir. Slim is more of a classic Chandler character with magic, including a certain moral ambiguity (he doesn’t like angels and pals around with demons, but at the end of the day he pretty much saves the day)
The first one is really enjoyable, and the sequels get a bit more convoluted, but nothing major. Good choice for a Dresden fan.
One of my favourite current series. Kadrey writes better prose than Butcher, he has a great freewheeling gonzo style and revels in the down-and-dirty pulp noir of having a streetwise troubleshooter anti-hero who was a gladiator and assassin in hell. I’m also very fond of Kadrey’s eschatology: his angels aren’t always the good guys, the demons aren’t always the bad guys, and Sandman Slim’s just a guy trying to make a dollar in a dirty world. And Hell. And Heaven. Kadrey writes a terrifically compelling Lucifer, too.
