I just bought Neil Gaiman’s new Sandman title and, while not as good as some of its predecessors (my favorites have been Fables & Reflections and World’s End ) it definitely has its moments. It’s divided into seven stories (one for each of the Endless) with the best being that of Dream in a story that takes place in the Eternity before Earth was created.
I’d be interested in reading what others think of it.
BTW, while I love SANDMAN & Mr. Punch, I’ve never been able to get into any of Gaiman’s novels (unless you count GOOD OMENS, which was mostly Terry Pratchett). Has anybody else had this experience?
I just bought Endless Nights too. I’ve only read the first three so far, and Dream’s was excellent. I’ll read the rest tonight. The Despair story sounds interesting.
Sandman got me interested in Gaiman, and so far, I’ve loved each of his novels…it would be hard for me to pick a favorite.
I’m also through the first three stories. Very nicely done, I must say. I was expecting something thought-provoking, something that furthered each of the Endless somehow; and so far, that’s what I’m reading.
And P. Craig Russell’s art in the Death story is superb.
I still have to manage a few more of Gaiman’s non-graphic works. I have read Neverwhere and bits and pieces out of Smoke and Mirrors, and I’ve liked them. And I have a copy of American Gods, which is on my list for when I get a bit of time.
The Despair story is excellent, in a depressing kind of way.
Spoons, You may want to take a look at “Stardust” too. It’s a lot shorter than American Gods, and therefore a much quicker read. I enjoyed it quite a bit. In my opinion, Gaiman is very good at the “fairy tale” type stories.
