I work in DC, and on my periodic food-truck jaunt, I see a new one- Best Mexican Burritos and Tortas. At first, I was going to get a burrito, but then I looked at the torta menu. A torta, apparently, is a round sandwich with some sort of mexican bread (the bread was not very special). I got the Cubana- it seemed to be filled with pretty much every ingredient common to Mexican and Cuban food- ham, chicken, mystery meat, cheese, avocado, eggs, tomatoes, beans, etc., and it was awesome.
What are some of your sandwich (or sandwich like) revelations?
Do yourself a favour, and hie yourself down to a Vietnamese place for bánh mì. I like the thịt nướng (grilled pork).
Don’t pay too much. A lot of places will charge you eight bucks. But seek out a place in your local Little Saigon and you should be able to find them for $2.50 or $3.
I frequented the bahn mi places in Falls Church, VA (including their 5 sandwiches for 11$ deal) until I got quite ill after one particular indulgence. In my mind I know they still are awesome, but my stomach still protests at the possibility of Bahn Mi.
When I was a kid I was sick and my mom tried to feed me tomato soup. I spewed it all over the floor. (To be fair, I did warn her.) I couldn’t eat tomato soup for years after that. I’m fine with it now. Maybe it’s time for another bánh mì?
I saw where they had these at a local bakery and got all excited until I noted that the only version was with tofu. I’m sure they are available at food carts downtown and must try one soon.
IMO, tofu can really shine in a banh mi. They’re great with pork, but unless you’re philosophically opposed to tofu, it’s worth a try.
My sandwich revelation was that BLTs weren’t the mediocre sandwiches I always thought they were, having had them at diners and bakeries and being underwhelmed. One day I decided to make them at home with excellent bacon and garden tomatoes, and it was practically a religious experience.
