Most of us who get into internet discussions realize that under Godwins Law, once one side of a debate equates the other side to the Nazis, the other side has won.
Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), elswhere defined as “the frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex” in response to his comments on gay rights, has brought Godwins Law to the Senate filibuster fight:
First of all, his quote simply makes no fucking sense.
Putting that aside, though I know other wingnuts have invoked the specter of Nazism (and Al Qaeda) in discussing the filibuster vote (and spawned nine page threads on it), this is a sitting U.S. Senator. Somehow I strongly suspect that the Holocaust surviviors and other victims of the Nazis that he represents would not appreciate the comparason. For all of the rhetoric about a “Nuclear Option”, this is not a “Final Solution.”
So, under Godwins Law, it looks like Santorum has lost the argument about filibusters. I hope he gets rightfully slammed for his offensive comments.
“Senator Byrd’s inappropriate remarks comparing his Republican colleagues with Nazis are inexcusable. These comments lessen the credibility of the senator and the decorum of the Senate. He should retract his statement and ask for pardon.”
Well, Byrd’s example does demonstrate that the tendency of rhetoric to become overheated is not limited to one party. Republican’s aren’t immune to this, not by a long shot.
I hope he retracts this. While I’m sure this was just an unfortunate rhetorical lapse, these need to be cleared up if they happen.
I find it curious, though, that the OP couldn’t remark on this subject without mentioning a disgusting sexual byproduct. How this makes the OP morally superior to Santorum is beyond me.
Santorum doesn’t have a preview key on the floor of the Senate, or unlimited typing time. You do, and yet you left that in, which rather concerns me. You wonder about offense that might be caused to Holocaust survivors, yet you deliberately sought to cause offense yourself.
I’ll give you the chance to do what Santorum certainly should do, which is to retract that comment and perhaps apologize for making it.
What’s wrong with mentioning a disgusting sexual byproduct here?
A poster on message board forum called the BBQ Pit, made for profanity and flaming, is to be held to the same standard as a Senator on the Senate floor? If not, then why compare the two?
Mr. Moto, do you deny people the right to humor? Because that is how I read Billdo’s post. First off, I saw it as being a funny reference to a certain newspaper columnist’s funny column. (Funny herein being definded as being a comment invoked to poke fun at what everyone knows, and let out tension.) Secondly, his attempt to define a word immediately after it’s being used brought to mind the “Series of Unfortunate Events” books, and Thirdly, you are aware of where you are, aren’t you? You have not been experiencing black outs recently, have you? Well, just so you know, this is the Pit.
Certainly. But even in the Pit, I have to wonder, since the subject is a rather coarse and inflammatory remark made by a politician.
Taking the high road doesn’t entail making coarse and inflammatory remarks yourself, no matter how well known they are.
We seem to demand a civility in politics that we as a people don’t want to observe anywhere else. The OP is a rather blatant example of that, and I regard it as somewhat hypocritical.
Cavilling at the OP’s posting style certainly serves the purpose of deflecting attention and criticism from the focus of the Pitting…how very neo-con of you.
Excellent on your part-Rove would be proud.
And the irony of Santorum’s accusation is so thick…how can any of them breath thru it?
Byrd’s pretty much senile. I expect this crap from him.
Actually, the more interesting them to me is the apparent blaring hypocrisy of Senator Santorum, evidenced by putting his two quotes quoted in this thread side by side.
You are aware that this is something of an old joke here on the board right? I can’t remember how many threads I’ve read it in, but it’s getting up there with “Hi Opal.” If you see Santorum, it’s almost always accompanied by “frothy mix, etc etc.”
If you want to get mad about it being a dead joke, that’s fine. This is the pit though. Comments like that are akin to punctuation round these here parts.
Do you have a comment on the op besides criticizing his posting style?

And in such a short time period, too! On 2 March he’s reprimanding Byrd for a Nazi comparison, and barely eleven weeks later he’s doing the same thing himself. Usually you have to dig up quotes from years or decades earlier in order to catch a politician using such a blatant double standard.
Yes, we demand a civilty in politics that we don’t wish to observe in places like a message board forum created for and devoted to flaming obscenity. To find that hypocritical is absolutely astonishing.
