We should have a ratonal discussion of the security challenges in the immediate, post-911 envir … TERROR ALERT!!!
I don’t know what Gingrich is going to do other than continue to lose. He says he won’t quit and he’s evidently making a bid for people who wanted to vote for Santorum, so maybe he’ll quit after that fails in Pennsylvania and the other states April 24. Or maybe he’ll drag it out for the sheer ego value.
As you go through life, this is a very important thing to know about people.
Definitely ego value – now that Santorum has dripped out, he hopes to get one final wave of attention.
Gingrich will stay in as long as his funding holds out.
Unfortunately for him, the reason his sugardaddy kept funding him this far was that he wanted to divide the opposition to Romney, to ensure that the reliably pro-rich candidate would get in. Now that Santorum’s out, Adelson has no reason to continue to pay Gingrich to inflate his ego.
Hard to see what Gingrich thinks he’s accomplishing at this point. When the guy who was beating you drops out because he realizes his chances of winning were hopeless, you should take that as a sign. And unlike Santorum, Gingrich has no hopes for 2016. This really is his last campaign. So why is he apparently burning his bridges with the Republican establishment?
Oh, don’t worry too much. I’m sure the stench of Santorum will linger for quite a long time.
That’s pretty devious. Is that your analysis or is there a more in-depth exploration somewhere?
I saw it in an article somewhere, I can’t remember where. That’s obviously not the entirety of Adelson’s motivation: If, by some long shot, Gingrich had won, then Adelson personally, even if not big businessmen in general, would certainly have been able to call in some big favors, and he may have decided that the risk-reward analysis on that alone was positive. But once it became clear that Gingrich’s slim chance was sliding to none, he continued funding him, just to keep Santorum out.
It seems counter-productive if his real goal was to support Romney. None of the “anti-Romneys” has been a serious threat to actually beat Romney but their ongoing campaigning has served to drain his resources, hurt his reputation, and keep the Republicans fighting among themselves. The people who have benefited most from keeping Gingrich, Santorum, and Paul in the race have actually been Obama supporters.
Yes, well, perhaps it’s not fair to hold a man Adelson’s age to a high standard of judgment. Maybe he thought somehow he was helping Romney, who knows?
