In the photos on the new album, Afterglow, we see that Sarah McLachlan’s let her hair grow out again, sort of like she had around the time of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy but darker. Not that I didn’t think she was pretty with short hair, but I love seeing her with those long locks again. There’s a sepia-toned picture on the inside cover of her laughing that’s great, and the color shot on the first interior page of the insert is just sublime.
The new album’s pretty good, too. Giving it a second listen-through right now, and it’s a strong album, not a disappointment at all. The first single from it, “Fallen,” was a bit bland, so I was worried that the whole thing would be that way. Not so. “Stupid” is a pretty powerful song, “Train Wreck” is great, and “Perfect Girl” definitely gets to me. Good stuff… I’ve missed new music from Sarah.
But I keep coming back to that long hair… duhrool, duhrool
I need to listen to it a bit more - it still seems pretty bland to me. But then again, I was the only person in the universe who actually liked “Surfacing” more than “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy”.
My personal favorite is actually The Freedom Sessions, basically acoustic versions of many of the songs on Fumbling, plus a great cover version of “Ol’ 55.” I liked Surfacing quite a bit, but I fell in love with Sarah’s music on The Freedom Sessions.
Afterglow is good, but it comes in fourth after those three albums. Possibly fifth, if one counts the Rarities album.
People like Sarah still give me hope that the uglies still have a place in the biz.

Afterglow will be my anniversary present to my sweetie, since I get paid two days before she does (insert evil laughter here). She hates me spending money on her, but she really really wants it, so there is no way she can refuse it. She will be so mad! (but in a cute way)
