The word “slut” is, in itself, a weapon used to demean women for being sexually active or expressive. There is usually nothing wrong with the behavior which leads to being called a slut (unless maybe it includes deception or infidelity or something), so the labelling of the behavior as “slutty” is mean-spirited and judgemental (and sexist as well. There is no equivalent word for men, no many how promiscuous they may be).
This makes no sense to me. I think being gay is perfectly fine, but I still think calling people queer is rude. What bearing does my opinion of a certain behaviour have on other people’s judgmentalism, or on the existence of insults related to the behaviour? “Slut” is an intrinsically derogatory term, regardless of my opinions about levels of sexual activity. If you call me a slut, you are saying you think I am sexually immoral. Regardless of what I think of my own behaviour, you just judged me.
Not that I have any opinion either way on Hilton, mind you - as you say, I couldn’t care less. Saw the Silverman clip though; profoundly unfunny, not because it was rude, but because it was a crap joke, poorly delivered.
Yes, I think Paris is sexually immoral. That’s why I called her a slut. I think showing your pussy to the world on purpose and making sex tapes to titillate is slutty. I do not think having lots and lots of sex is slutty, however.
Now, if you or anyone else thinks this behavior is fine, then me calling Paris a slut shouldn’t bother you. You obviously do not believe these behaviors are bad. You cannot convince me that they are just fine and dandy. Telling me not to call a slut a slut doesn’t help your cause at all. Do take my Annie Sprinkle example-- she doesn’t think it’s bad to fuck on film for money, so calling her a slut does not demean her. She revels in her sluttiness. I kinda dig her for that.
And if a man were to flash his dick every time he got out of a car for fun and attention, then he’s a slut too.
Oh and calling a gay person queer is not demeaning. Maybe you meant ‘faggot’.
What’s “immoral” about it?
This is absurd. It’s like saying, “If you don’t think there’s anything wrong with homosexuality then me calling them faggots shouldn’t bother you.”
I have no wish to convince you, just pointing out that your use of the word “slut” is demeaning and judgemental and it appears that you INTEND it to be demeaning and judgemental. That’s fine, but don’t try to deny that the word is insulting.
I’m not telling you what not to call her. Call her whatever you want. Just don’t pretend that it’s not judgemental and sexist.
Yes it does.
She is not demeaned by it, then it is not demeaning to her. And I have already admitted I am judging Paris to be something I think is distasteful. What she does is distasteful to me. If you do not find her behavior distateful, then, again, good on you. To me, she is a slut, plain and simple.
Since I do not think being a homosexual is distasteful, I do not call them faggots. But I will call a male homosexual a cocksucker, just as I can and do call Paris one. Because we have documented proof that she is, in acutal fact, a cocksucker.
Yes, it is, and no, I didn’t. Some gay people are in the process of reclaiming “queer”, it seems, but I as a straight man am not about to use it to describe anyone I want to remain friends with. Or anyone else, for that matter; it’s fucking rude. “Faggot” is a whole new level of vileness, which is why I chose the milder example.
This whole conversation is just too weird. I suggest you go ask a gay man whether he likes the term “cocksucker”. See how the “literal description” argument goes down. I really can’t believe that you think that would be an acceptable way to describe someone, gay or not. The term originated to express disdain for gay people, just as the term slut has for hundreds of years been used to express disdain for women who are considered promiscuous by whatever the standards of the age are. I don’t understand how you can insist that these ingrained negative connotations simply go away if the target thinks their behaviour is fine. Insults don’t work like that.
You are correct; she is not demeaned by it. The speaker is demeaned by it.
Ah yes: Paris is rubber; Biggirl, glue. Likewise have so many of us been tragically ensnared by this inarguable playground truism.
Best not to mention the toxic smell surrounding Ms. Hilton either, Biggirl, lest ye be accused of having dealt it.
FYI, not all male homosexuals suck cock.
My condolences. I hope you got your money back.
If I ever need to provide proof for my point that Paris Hilton drives people crazy all I’ll need to do is link to this thead.
{walks away shaking head}
Are you suggesting that I was calling Biggirl a slut? You’re either not reading my previous posts, or deliberately misunderstanding them.
I’ll rephrase my point one more time, and as simply as I can:
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A “SLUT.”
Is that clear enough?
Calling a woman a “slut” means two things: (1) she has sex with people; and (2) solely because of that fact, she is unworthy of respect. If anyone claims to mean anything other than that by the word “slut,” I don’t believe them. The word is nothing more than a cheap and disingenuous attempt to take over the moral high-ground via the hypocritical hysteria that attaches to sex in our culture.
The reason I said the word demeans the speaker, and not the object, is that it shows the speaker to be passing moral judgment on the woman in question, based solely on the fact that she enjoys sex. No, let me clarify that: The speaker passes moral judgment based on the woman’s having the temerity to admit–or even to proclaim (heaven forfend!)–that she enjoys sex.
And I’ll repeat this part, too, since there seems to be a short-term memory virus going around here lately: Paris Hilton is a stupid, vain, shallow, cruel, possibly racist, attention-craving, media whore. But she is not a slut.
I can’t make this any clearer than that. I’m done here.
I don’t think anyone is looking to champion Paris as a slut.
And while I’m here, my opinion of Paris. Hot enough. She got a slutty vibe about her, but that’s a positive. Ain’t nothing wrong with a girl who is “slutty” (although I do have more admiration for someone like Annie Sprinkle who is embracing the word). From what I hear about her, she’s vapid & vacant, with an ugly soul. Attention whore. So overall, can’t say I like her much.
But, wow, the hatred directed her way seems so out of proportion to who she is. It’s actually made me slightly sympathetic to her (but then I remember the racist stuff and lose the sympathy). Still, I can’t seem to get myself to care enough about her hate her that much.
Would you also call a black person a nigger? Why or why not?
Mangina?
