Sarnath'd

I noticed this not too long ago somewhere on here. The term ‘Sarnath’d’ is used in online terms in the same manner as the offline term ‘jinx’: It’s said when one poster simulposts roughly the same sentiment as another poster.

I imagined it must refer to some ancient, long-forgotten poster who had a habit of doing just this, but a search of the member list didn’t bring up a Sarnath. Furthermore, there’s an entry on urbandictionary for the term, meaning it’s likely not just a Doper expression. Google just returns the name as a location and forename in India.

Anyone know the origins of the term? (Do terms on the internet even have origins?)

Possibly The Doom That Came to Sarnath

Here’s what the Wikipedia entry says:

That is a wiki, but it is not Wikipedia. (Reminder folks: there’s more than one wiki in the world.)

I immediately thought of Lovecraft’s The Doom that Came from Sarnath, too. I’ve never heard or read this slang, though.

If you were televised, would that be Sarnoffed?

(The Doom that Came from Sarnoff, by H.P. ThirtyFiveCraft)

Guh-- I’ve turned into the OTHER kind of nerd. I didn’t think of Lovecraft (anymore) but instead of Deer Park Sarnath where Gautama preached for the first time, setting the wheel of the law in motion. So they could be making a Buddhism reference?

Sorry about misidentifying the wiki. I did a Google search for something about Sarnath, found that page and copied it to my reply, and didn’t look carefully at the page after I copied it. The name “Sarnath” of the poster who inspired this term was probably chosen because of the Lovecraft reference, not the Buddhist reference, since it came from a message board about the game Magic: The Gathering.
