Okay, I’m new here myself, so I hope no one will think I’m being presumptious. I’ve managed to figure out a few SDMB ‘in-jokes’ and have gotten plenty of help from other dopers when I was confused. Here’s what I’ve learned:
Hi Opal!- You will almost never see this in any recent post. It began long ago when a prominent poster named OpalCat pointed out that only two items does not make a list, and a proper list must have at least three items. People began putting the phrase “Hi Opal!” as the third item on their list. Soon, a backlash began- people grew tired of the joke. It’s almost never used now. For the love of all that you hold sacred, never do this. The ensuing shitstorm will be swift and inescapable, and rightly so.
Band name!- This is still somewhat common, although not as much as it once was. I’m not sure (and I hope some wiser and more experienced doper can help me with this) but I believe it started with a Dave Barry humor column. Whenever an unlikely or bizarre set of words are paired, it sounds like a band name. For instance: “Mayonnaise Anime Tri-planes” “Band name!”
OG SMASH!- This comes from long ages past, and I may be repeating an incomplete form of the myth, but it began with a particularly annoying Christian fundamentalist poster who kept mis-typing the phrase ‘son of god’ as ‘son og god’. Somebody postulated the existence of a caveman-like god named Og, who when displeased would smite everything in his path. Thus, OG SMASH! (and less often, OG SMITE!)
When come back, bring pie! This is in reference to a web cartoon about two egg-shaped creatures named Weebl and Bob. They often talk about pie, and have strange adventures together. When people use it, they usually seem to be doing one of two things: dismissing a bizarre or incoherent OP, or just getting a laugh. You can see this here.
My cat’s breath smells like cat food. A quote from [The Simpsons*, by the character of Ralph Wiggum. Usually used it to dismiss an incoherent or pointlessly stupid OP.
ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US- this has apparently become some sort of national media phenomenon. It began with the hilariously bad translation of the original Japanese into English in a video game. I’ve seen it used to mock people putting forward a conspiracy theory or claiming knowledge or authority they do not actually possess. Find out the details
here.
asshat, ass-goblin, fucktard, fuckfoon, goat-felching- these are all common terms of abuse in the Pit. Where they originated I know not, but I’m pretty sure that ‘fuckfoon’ and ‘ass-goblin’ are SDMB originals. You’re already familiar with ‘turdburglar’.
This is only a partial list, and I hope that wiser dopers than I will come in with more info and correct my mistakes. Long and glorious is the lore of the SDMB!
You can also find out more info my checking out a thread called “The SDMB Anthology Project”. Do a search for it- I’m sorry, but I almost always badly screw up my attempts to link to board threads. (Can anyone help me with this? I feel like such an idiot.)
