Turdburgle?!

I have been on the forums for about a week now. I’ve noticed that a certain set of in jokes or slang words seems to have developed here.

Has anyone compiled a glossary or “Newbies’ Guide”?

Maybe we could use this thread to start cataloguing these words/phrases and their origins. Consider it a linguistic excercise in the etymology of an emerging dialect.

I know, “You’re not cleared for that info” and “fnord”

Turdburgle?!

Turdburgle:

To steel another’s turds either by force or stealth.

That should be STEAL, I wasn’t able to access my edit feature…

i find this as well. i made a statement on another thread which i should have edit-ed as it is misleading.
why is the edit not enabled…and i ask this in newbie fashion
sheetsteel:D

I don’t know the official answer to this and it has annoyed me more than once as well. However, I always suspected that so much of what is doen on this board is in response to what others have said that it’d be a nightmare if people could change it.

For instance:
JoeSchmo, you are a complete turdburgler for suggesting that it is somehow ok to hit people on the head for no reason with a baseball bat!”

Reply from JS:
“I never said that! Where’d I say that? You’re an ass for even suggesting such a despicable thing.”

In the end you have to live with what you post for better or worse.

straight dope man and i see it now
makes for dialogue, rebuttal and plenty of objections.
will need to concentrate more on exactitude and thought deliberation next time joeshmo posts
thanks

Yep, WaM’s got it–they keep us from editing our posts to keep us honest.

And to remind us all that we’re human.

And to provide a use for the :smack: .

Here is the only place I’ve see turd burglar used. Figured everyone has gotten this gag in email at least twice by now…or am I missing something?

Nope, just you.

Here’s my one turdburgle experience:

Truth Seeker
East-bound train on a west-bound track

quote:

The Bible does not claim to be the Word of God.

Uh-Oh . . .

I’ve enjoyed this thread so far. Hopefully, it’s long enough now that it won’t get turdburgled.

I don’t have a cite to back this up, but I’d wager a pretty confident guess that “turdburgler” originates with Beavis & Butthead. That’s the only place I’ve ever heard this term used, though I suppose the writers may have lifted it from somewhere else.

I recall first hearing the term “turdburglar” in the summer of '89 when I worked as a janitor at a factory. Jim, the receivables guy, used the term as a derogatory reference to homosexuals. I believe you understand the reference.

That’s because you don’t have an edit feature, despite the edit button under your posts to the contrary. If I’m not mistaken, the only ones who may edit posts are the administrators of this board.

Martin_ibn_martin: I very much suspect you are looking at an attempted genesis of a whole new bit of SDMB lingo. Just a WAG, but I think Truthseeker was perhaps making a reference to this thread ( read down a few posts and then note how it goes on, and on, and on… ) :

Posited meaning? Perhaps hijacking a thread into a particularly divisive turn that doesn’t contribute materially to the topic at hand?

But that’s just a guess :).

Beavis and Butt-head may have used the term turd burglar as an insult, but Beavis did wax philosophical about faeces - “Why is it called taking a dump? You’re not taking it anywhere. They should call it leaving a dump.”

Not that I have a problem with those who have that preference.

I know a lot of turdburglers, but…

Really. I wasn’t intending to focus on one word. I really want a thread on the slang used by the Teeming Millions, (when did that one start?), not one specific word.

Okay, I’m new here myself, so I hope no one will think I’m being presumptious. I’ve managed to figure out a few SDMB ‘in-jokes’ and have gotten plenty of help from other dopers when I was confused. Here’s what I’ve learned:

Hi Opal!- You will almost never see this in any recent post. It began long ago when a prominent poster named OpalCat pointed out that only two items does not make a list, and a proper list must have at least three items. People began putting the phrase “Hi Opal!” as the third item on their list. Soon, a backlash began- people grew tired of the joke. It’s almost never used now. For the love of all that you hold sacred, never do this. The ensuing shitstorm will be swift and inescapable, and rightly so.

Band name!- This is still somewhat common, although not as much as it once was. I’m not sure (and I hope some wiser and more experienced doper can help me with this) but I believe it started with a Dave Barry humor column. Whenever an unlikely or bizarre set of words are paired, it sounds like a band name. For instance: “Mayonnaise Anime Tri-planes” “Band name!”

OG SMASH!- This comes from long ages past, and I may be repeating an incomplete form of the myth, but it began with a particularly annoying Christian fundamentalist poster who kept mis-typing the phrase ‘son of god’ as ‘son og god’. Somebody postulated the existence of a caveman-like god named Og, who when displeased would smite everything in his path. Thus, OG SMASH! (and less often, OG SMITE!)

When come back, bring pie! This is in reference to a web cartoon about two egg-shaped creatures named Weebl and Bob. They often talk about pie, and have strange adventures together. When people use it, they usually seem to be doing one of two things: dismissing a bizarre or incoherent OP, or just getting a laugh. You can see this here.

My cat’s breath smells like cat food. A quote from [The Simpsons*, by the character of Ralph Wiggum. Usually used it to dismiss an incoherent or pointlessly stupid OP.

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US- this has apparently become some sort of national media phenomenon. It began with the hilariously bad translation of the original Japanese into English in a video game. I’ve seen it used to mock people putting forward a conspiracy theory or claiming knowledge or authority they do not actually possess. Find out the details
here.

asshat, ass-goblin, fucktard, fuckfoon, goat-felching- these are all common terms of abuse in the Pit. Where they originated I know not, but I’m pretty sure that ‘fuckfoon’ and ‘ass-goblin’ are SDMB originals. You’re already familiar with ‘turdburglar’.

This is only a partial list, and I hope that wiser dopers than I will come in with more info and correct my mistakes. Long and glorious is the lore of the SDMB!

You can also find out more info my checking out a thread called “The SDMB Anthology Project”. Do a search for it- I’m sorry, but I almost always badly screw up my attempts to link to board threads. (Can anyone help me with this? I feel like such an idiot.)

In searching for

The SDMB Anthology Project

I get exactly one result…this thread.

Evidently, I am no good at the search thingy.

evidently I am no good at signing off my wife’s ID and signing on mine

What about some abbreviations? Some of these took me a while to figure out, and I only figured them out based on the context, so please correct me if I’m wrong.
IIRC = If I Recall Correctly (this took me forever to figure out; then one day, when I wasn’t even at my PC, I thought of it and slapped my head)
IANAxxx = I Am Not A xxx (e.g. IANAL = I Am Not A Lawyer; IANAMarine Biologist; etc.)
WAG = Wild Ass Guess
… and a couple that have been asked about in recent threads:

OP = Original Post or Original Poster. i.e. “To address the original OP…”
SO = Significact Other

I can’t think of any others right now, but someone else will add to this, I’m sure.

Ahh, thanks Rucksinator. Some of those have bugged me for a while. I’m sure there are more but can I think of any right now?!
