What is the origin of the low pitched satan voice that appears in horror movies and heavy metal albums
Just read my sig.
The British rock singer Arthur Brown, with his 1968 hit single Fire, which began with his growling announcement, “I am the god of hellfire!” A direct influence on Alice Cooper and Kiss.
I would just add that the animated short Fétiche (1934), has a scene with the *Devil, and even though he doesn’t actually talk, he does give a somewhat similar low rumbling laugh.
*In fact, a segment of this is often called The Devil’s Ball.
To the best of my knowledge, Bathory was the first metal band to use what we think of as metal vocals. They weren’t growling, though; they were using raspy black metal vocals. I don’t know who the first band to growl was, although they couldn’t have been any later than Napalm Death.
In operatic treatments, the role of the Devil (Satan, Mephistopheles, what have you) is typically given to the bass. Gounod’s Faust (from 1859) is the best example.
Higher voices represent youth and passion. Lower voices represent power, authority, and gravitas.
