Saturday Night Live; 1/30/10 (Jon Hamm hosting)

Head’s up, Jon Hamm is hosting again. Hopefully we’ll get another Mad-Men sketch or too.

Sergio!

I wonder if Jon Hamm has ever worked with Kevin Bacon.

Pies! Pies! Pies!

I liked the idea of calling back an earlier sketch in a later sketch. Have they ever done that before?

Looks like Scott Brown may be the new Mango. Overall, Hamm did a good job–though if he hosts a 3rd time, how will they play off his name next time? Weekend Update was also strong, and I’m glad Randy & Greg took the skit in a new direction (and it was funny to see the return of closet organizer guy later in the evening).

The “Don’t make me sing” lady seemed like another sketch that they’re hoping to recur, though let’s hope I’m wrong (as much as I love Wiig). Weird that probably the worst two sketches were the first 2. Still, overall a better night than the last couple of months.

Hamm & Buble made me laugh out loud, which has been far and few between lately.
Overall, I thought it was a good non-Wiig centered show. I like her, but in small doses.

Sergio!

I remember a Sergio-like character in The Lost Boys, but if I recall, the shirtless long-haired Latin saxophone player was something of a cliche in many 1980s-era music videos.

Sergio!

I thought it was clever too, and wondered the same thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done before in that way.

The “I’m not gay!” bit at the beginning made me assume it would end up being another gay-themed sketch—it was refreshing to have it take an unexpected turn.

Wiig was great in that sketch, but the sketch went nowhere and was too long and the writing didn’t support the great job Wiig did. They really need some good sketch writers on SNL. Of course they always have. Except when Col. Angus was in town.

The Closet Organizer callback reminded me of how they do things at Second City and other long-form improv shows. You’ll get introduced to characters in sketches early on that get called back in funny ways later. Fun stuff.

Hamm was great! I laughed my ass off at the Scott Brown skit. The flapper vision just sent it over the top funny. Am I the only person who had never heard of Buble?

I just wish we’d get another “Bitch Please” appearance on Weekend Update.

I hadn’t either, but I thought he actually did a better job in the sketch than Jon Hamm did. I think Hamm is phenomenal on Mad Men, but in comic skits he can sometimes be a… performer who overacts… hmm, can’t quite think of the word.

Me too, but sadly that was Michaela Watkins’ character and she was fired last summer (along w/ Casey Wilson).

He was much better in the first SNL he did, but I think he had stronger material there, too. The Mad Men sketch he did, where he gives a “carousel”-type speech about a hoola-hoop with straps, was genius.

And then there was the Jon Hamm John Ham, which was truly inspired. (And far funnier than the Peter Saarsgaard SARS Guard.)
