Thought it odd that they announced the rerun with next week’s date, without clearly indicating it was a rerun.
Tom Hanks pretty much hit it on the head in the open, saying [paraphrase] “There will be some pretty good stuff, and some dreck.” Pretty accurate for most SNLs.
My wife enjoyed it more than I. I doubt I’d watch another ep done this way - even tho I recognize it as a valiant effort by folk trying to do the best they can under very challenging circumstances.
Thought it off that they had 2 raps by Pete Davidson. Did people find them funny? Funny enough to have TWO of them? Perhaps my lack of appreciation for rap impairs my ability to appreciate sendups of the form.
The $2000 one was funny and pretty spot on if you ever watched any wannabe rapper videos on Youtube.
I think both videos made the show because they were scrambling to fill up an hour’s worth of content. The bit with Fred Armisen was probably pretty accurate when the writers were asked to submit ideas.
I found them very mildly amusing. Rap is definitely not my thing (though I have enjoyed some of the rap parodies SNL has done in the past), so i personally could have done without one or both of them. But they’re the kind of content that can be done reasonably well under these special circumstances.
You guys do realize that this was all done remotely by people who were at their houses- both performers and producers, right? And I kind of think it was sort of a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing, and broke new ground in a lot of ways.
Personally I found it funny overall- maybe not perfect, but considering the circumstances, a pretty valiant attempt at making their show, even if it wasn’t perfect or as polished as we might hope. At the VERY worst, it was better than a rerun.
I agree that it was pretty good, given the circumstances. (And regarding “better than a rerun”, the one after it was a 2013 episode with Justin Timberlake as guest host. That was a pretty good rerun.)
One interesting thing was getting glimpses into the various cast members’ homes. Turns out Tom Hanks and I have pretty similar taste in kitchen cabinets (tho I have no doubt his are considerably higher end!)
The choices some folk made as to where to be filmed with what in the background. For ex., Colin Jost just happened to have a guitar casually propped on the couch. Michael Che apparently likes pool and sports stuff. Keenan had his kids w/ him…
I enjoyed seeing it, knowing that normally SNL shows have some skits that are great and many kind of suck. It’s still worth watching SNL just to see the cast try to get through live sketches.
This weekend was just different, seeing not a live performance, but instead seeing the cast deal with a limited platform. Yes, it is fun to see the homes in the backgrounds (my kids would have loved Jimmy Fallon’s house from The Tonight Show). I liked seeing Tom Hanks’ typewriter collection (as seen in California Typewriter).
Ii liked the musical performance (that I very often skip over), and the Hal Willner tribute at the end was very nice. The ending shot of an empty stage was particularly moving.
We re-watched You’ve Got Mail recently. One of the highlighted negative aspects of Meg Ryan’s boyfriend (Greg Kinear) is he loves old typewriters. So she ends up with Tom Hanks. Wait til she finds out …
Yeah, thanks. The last episode wasn’t GREAT, but it was fun. Pete Davidson actually did something besides standup in a Weekend Update segment, so good for him. I always like Jost and Che, and Che using his grandmother’s real-life death (from Covid-19) to guilt Jost into doing another joke exchange was great fun for me, and Jost seemed to genuinely laugh too. Some good stuff, some I wished I’d fast-fowarded through, but a welcome respite from the usual quarantine routine.
Wonder who’s gonna do the monologue and musical segment this week.
I’m a few minutes behind via the DVR right now, but so far I thought the cold-open was a homerun, and the Whats Up Wit Dat was a triple.
Nice surprise with the PD music video. Call that one a double. I thought the supermarket sketch and Air BnB ones were both line-drive singles. The musical performance is starting out fine.
Seems like two weeks ago was the trial run and tonight seems much more polished.
Halfway through - I’d be shocked if this one is given lower “ratings” than two weeks ago.
I don’t know how anyone could hate on these. This is just a best-effort attempt to entertain us when there’s little else to watch. You also see who else is a good sport at times like this - Tom Hanks (as if we didn’t already know that), Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, and Chris Martin. They didn’t have to do anything and no one would have given it a second thought, but they volunteered under less-than-ideal circumstances and gave us something to distract us from our troubles.
What Up Wit Dat brought back Jason Sudakis and his insane dancing again!
I couldn’t agree more. I’m curious though, what the consensus was re: Jason Sudeikis - was tonight’s footage of him taped between 4/12/20 - 4/25/20, or was that some groovy CDG editing that the SNL producers did?
Nothing about these at-home shows, nor in the history of the show, makes me think they’d do use old footage. Not really in the spirit of everything else they were doing. Guess he’s at home with nothing to do like everyone else. Also, he had a really bad wig on that I don’t recall him using before. Either that, or his hair was getting long when the quarantine hit
