Saturday Night Live will be back on April 11th

Who was playing the guitar while she was singing?

Andrew Watt:

Thanks. Some of the comments to that article were hilarious; some really hated it. Personally, I thought she did a pretty good job.

There is a third at-home episode tonight. It’s the season finale. I hope in September the show is back in the studio with a live (not socially distanced) audience.

I was excited when I saw the reminder from Dewey, but unfortunately for me this was the weakest of the three At Home episodes.

I thought they stuck the landing with Weekend Update (I laughed out loud at the “Miss Hitler Pageant” punch line, and I’ve always loved when Che writes a joke for Jost to read).

And the second “special guest” (that Jost interviewed) is my favorite “recurring character”-impression on the show. Hilarious as always.

But in my opinion Wiig has always been either hit or miss, and for me her appearances in this one were a big miss. And none of the other sketches got more than a slight chuckle from me.

Of these last three episodes, I’d give the first one a B, the second one an A-, and this one a C+. It just felt “mailed in” to me.

I wonder if these episodes are a pain in the ass to produce, compared to a live show. Perhaps they felt “let’s just get through this Saturday, take summer off, and maybe September will be back to sorta normal”.

Agree with your ranking, though I think a C+ is very generous. A sad ep when the real commercials are funnier than anything on the show (I loved the Google thanks to teachers with the kid standing on the table behind Zoom bombing her mother with bunny ears.) In comparison I’d give a straight up A to last week’s.

The “Let Kids Drink” bit was if anything disturbing, but not at all funny.

Honestly my wife and I both thought Che was impaired in some way for Weekend Update.

The only bit I liked wasn’t so funny but sweet - the dreams bit.

I just looked at the list of starting and ending dates and episode numbers for each season of SNL. As you can see, since the 1988-89 season, it has started between September 13 and October 8 and has ended between May 9 and May 21, having done between 18 and 21 episodes. So in that sense this season has been pretty typical.

This episode was, overall, a letdown for me. Nary a laugh, even from the host and guest star whom I usually find to be very funny much of the time.

But McKinnon’s pastiche of The Lighthouse (which I saw just this past week) was amazing. Not “haha” hilarious, by any means, but an incredible take that smacked of genius. My already very high opinion of her went up a notch.

I haven’t seen The Lighthouse so I didn’t realize that’s what Kate McKinnon was parodying. I thought her segment was showing what one can do with limited resources. I imagine that’s what an improv class is like.

Even though there are no more episodes for the season, apparently they’ve decided that cast members can each create a “web exclusive” video for YouTube during this time:
