In a time when sports teams are pressured to change their names or mascots so as to not be offensive to American Indians, how in the world can Savage Arms continue to use an Indian Head as their symbol? This is a very old and prolific gun maker with wide distribution all over the United States. I wouldn’t expect them to ever change their name but I’m very surprised that they are able to get away with their logo.
Gun-makers aren’t as prone to roll-over in the face of political correctness as sports teams are?
I will concede that the Savage logo is significantly more dignified than, say, the Cleveland Indians one.
Is Savage owned my Browning? I seem to remember browning was bought by a huge offshore conglomerate - no cite - and their products are not made in the USA at all. Savage my either be owned by a non-US conglomerate and thus wouldn’t look into re-branding based on American Indian issues, or they simply do not equate it as you do.
BTW - My savage classic 17 HMR is the most accurate rifle I have fired.
My Savage 64 says “Made in Canada”
But I mean…they have Indians there too…
I think this question has it’s roots in Pre-PC movement brands being re-branded to be more PC. I doubt Savage cares about PC… I dunno.
Up here we have “aboriginals.” Humph.
Well, does Savage Arms have customers who might be offended by their branding?
This issue has nothing to do with political correctness, and everything to do with avoiding controversy. If Savage Arms thought they could potentially lose customers over their branding, then they’d change their branding. But it seems to me they think their customer base isn’t going to care, and they’re probably right.
Briefly, the company was started by Arthur Savage and the logo came from an Indian Chief who bought rifles for his reservation.
At least now I know where to go if I ever need a Left Hand Varmint Rifle.
Wait a minute – how do I know whether the varmint is left-handed?
