There will be no spoiler tags in this thread. This movie is sixteen years old!
What an awesomely bad sci-fi movie. And I like awesomely bad sci-fi movies! Really, I liked most of it except for Sly. The villain just stole the scene in any scene he was in. Sly always talks like he has a mouthful of marbles.
I got a little irritated that there had to be an obligatory girl-fight. I mean, Joan Chen was only in that movie to give the Hershey character someone to fight. She’s an experienced Judge! In an extremely tough city! And the movie was made in 1995…yet we still have to put up with stupid catfights.
I would have preferred them to get rid of Hershey entirely, if that was the way they were going to do, and make Rob Schneider a pretty, cute little blond girl that fought Joan Chen in the end. Rob Schneider wasn’t funny most of the time, and rarely did anything, except at the end.
Other than that, I liked the cool gun and the cool bike. The poor old Judge, Dredd’s “father”, trekked all the way across the goddamn desert to deliver his message and then get killed.
As hokey as Judge Dredd was, it cemented my love for Armand Assante, even though I’ve never seen any of his movies except Dredd and the spoof movie Fatal Instinct. The guy just chews the scenery brilliantly.
“LUUUUAAAAW!”
As for Schneider, I don’t have the hate for him many people do, but he was definitely superfluous. Dredd was just made at a time when studios considered it mandatory to have a blatant comic relief character, and Schneider was cast in that role over half the time.
I actually kind of liked this movie as well. Of course, I also liked Demolition Man. It seems I like Sylvester Stallone movies where he’s not trying to take himself seriously.
This is no Demolition Man. The best thing in Demolition Man was Wesley Snipes, whose refusal to pay his taxes does not reflect badly his acting. The best thing about Judge Dredd is Rob Schneider. I said, the best thing about Judge Dredd is Rob Schneider. Maybe I need to say it louder:The best thing about Judge Dredd is Rob Schneider
Hmmm, why hasn’t every copy of this movie been struck by lightning and rendered inoperable?
That’s right, Rob Schneider mocking Sly with “I am de law!” is the best part of this movie.
“Hi, my name is Greedysmurf, and I enjoyed Judge Dredd”
I don’t know why, because I can clearly see from a pragmatic viewpoint, that it is quite deficient in the movie making craft, but I can’t seem to care damn it, I just love it.
Perhaps it stems from the fact that I read a lot of the original comics the movie was based on as a kid and adored them. And I’m not sure what this says about the comics, but I thought the movie captured some of the tone and atmosphere of the comics quite well.
Maybe I’m closet Sly fan, because I’ll happily watch Demolition Man when it comes on TV to.
I only knew Assante from the Ridley Scott Colombus movie, but man, when I saw Fatal Instinct… The guy is an absolute riot. I will always remember him chewing on his oreos in the kitchen.
As for the Dredd movie itself. Sadly, it didnt really get that Dredd isnt supposed to be a sympathetic character or be the audience’s POV character. Removing his helmet should be done only with extreme care, storywise. He spends half the fucking movie without his suit, that’s not Dredd, that’s Sly in Demolition Man.
That said, the ABC Warrior Robot was really scary and well done for its time.
The Cure’s song for this movie “Dredd Song” really doesn’t fit with the style, but it’s a really good song. There’s a “Vader mix” out there with samples from Star Wars inserted that’s pretty good too.
I love stupidly bad sci fi movies and stupidly bad action movies, Judge Dredd combines both of those things and it is awe-inspiring in its glory.
I do not know that films like that could be made intentionally, and this level of trainwreck is only so enjoyable because at some point someone somewhere started this movie intending it to be something other than a farce.
