I definitely liked it.
The directors took a big risk making a realistic everywoman the main character instead of giving into the pressure to make Tatum’s male supersoldier the lead.
This strong break from convention allowed them to borrow from and homage many different films whilst still keeping its uniqueness.
Unfortunately, this very human protagonist drained a lot of energy from the film, Audiences love escaping into worlds where people seemingly like them accomplish miracles, I’d have probably performed similarly badly to her, but I don’t like being told that for two hours straight.
The art direction and worldbuilding were top notch, and I’m sad the poor box office will make it unlikely we’ll get a chance to revisit it.
The film was very efficiently and effectively scripted, you never felt lost or bored, though it seemed perhaps they wasted an opportunity to have more interaction between the Abrarax siblings.
The standard of acting was good, Kunis was very believable, though again as the character was very uninspiring, the actress got some undeserved flak. I think Redmayne could have been better, or at least shown some versatility.
There was a huge twist at the end.
Sean Bean’s character lived!
