Did any other DC-area Dopers catch this show?
A great performance by the old rockers! Daltry’s voice was a little rough from a cold, but he still managed to belt out the songs with feeling. A much more polished and crisp show than the last time I had seen them (way back in 1974). The high point (for me) was a rousing and rowdy rendition of “Baba O’Riley”. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the audience participated with singing along to all the hits. The new stuff from “Endless Wire”, although unfamiliar to me, was on par with the old chestnuts! I may need to go out and buy this CD.
I took my teenage daughters, and they had a blast! They were very amused by all of us older fans showing so much emotion (“head-banging” as they termed it).
All-in-all, one of the finer concerts I’ve been to!
Thanks for the scoop. I’d been wondering if the new album was worth buying. The Who was my favorite band when I was in high school.
I saw them in Denver from a skybox for free! Thank you rich friend! I saw them once before in 1982 (heh, supposedly their last tour). It was a terrific show this year. Pete went off! He was windmilling like he was 25. Remember the tour where he was planning on playing in a little “shelter” to protect his damaged hearing? None of that bullshit on this tour. Zak Starkey is a helluva drummer. According to wikipedia, Keith Moon gave Zak his first professional drum kit, the one he used previously. Talk about destiny!
The encore was about 4 or 5 songs from Tommy! Fantastic concert.
I’ve seen 3 shows on the tour, and was fortunate enough to be in front at the Fresno show. After all these years, it’s like spending an evening with old friends. I have no complaints about missing members or static setlists. I’m just glad to spend time with Pete and Roger, and celebrate that we’re all still alive and kicking.
I can describe a Who concert in one word: catharsis. No matter what was on my mind before the show started, when ICE starts up, there is nothing in the world but the men and the music they’ve created for a good solid couple of hours. And, then, afterwards, all of the cares of the day have been lifted away…easily worth whatever I’ve paid for a ticket. No other band has done that for me with so much consistency over the last 35 years.
Long live rock, and long live The Who.
I am profoundly green w/ envy…glad to hear the kids are still all right!!!
I’m a noob here, so don’t crucify me.
I’m glad everybody is enjoying the current tour, and everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Still, it makes me sad that The Who is still touring, or touring as “The Who.” To me, it wasn’t really The Who after Moon died. Now without Entwistle… It’ll never be The Who without that pair. Now it’s two guys who used to be in The Who and some back-up musicians. Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey are still great musicians and they’re entitled to do whatever they want, but you can’t replace The Ox and Moon the Loon. Maybe I’m an old dinosaur, but that’s the way I feel. Oddly enough, I would feel better if they called the whole affair “Who 2”. I think I heard a rumor to that effect once.
BTW, it should be noted I am a bass player. I freely admit the lack of Entwistle biases me. And where there’s bass players, you’ll find drummers…So there’s my devotion to Moon.
Wasn’t it Daltrey who said they are now more like a great tribute band who doesn’t have to pay royalties?
Love Roger, love Pete. I saw the farewell tour in 1982, and loved it then. I would see them this time, but I don’t go to big arenas anymore (it’s a PITA).
