Say hello to Bird the dog! (puppy pics)

My family decided recently that no sane person could be expected to live with only three dogs, so they’ve adopted a fourth. He arrived today and it looks like he’s settling in pretty well. I’ll see him this weekend. His name is Bird, and he’s a Gordon Setter. He’s four months old and weighs about 35 pounds now, and they say he’ll weigh around 70 pounds when he’s grown up. He is actually the nephew of Jack, our largest dog, through one of Jack’s sisters. I’m told he’s shy but playful and I’m looking forward to meeting him this weekend.

Hello, Bird. Good doggy.
Cool album poster in the background.

Oh, he’s beautiful! What a gorgeous pup!

Well of COURSE!!! One can never have too many Gordies!

Bird is gorgeous! Very appropriate name for a bird dog!

He looks quite happy with his little green stuffie… if he’s anythng like my Gordons, he won’t ever tear it up.

Give him a big ol’ hug from me please!

Interesting. Jacks destroys every toy he touches. They usually don’t last more than a couple of days. I know he ripped the throat out of a couple of squeak toys when he was younger. Fortunately he doesn’t have discriminating tastes and he’s usually happy to chew on a toilet paper tube. We’re told Bird is more into tennis balls and likes to takes rip the fuzz off, which is what our first Gordon, Lucy, liked to do.

My old Gordie, Fancy? I bought her a little stuffed pink pig before I ever brought her home. She loved and cherished that little pig till the day she died when she was 10. The only thing wrong with Piggy? One ear and the tail are ripped off.

Who ripped them off, you ask? No, not sweet Fancy… Cricket, the Papillon.

Piggy is now in the curio cabinet on top of Fancy’s wooden creamains container, with her collar.

Handsome boy!

What a beautiful puppy! He has quite an engaging expression. Nice doggie!

What a cutie!

Meh – my cat could beat him up.

He’s a cuddly one, though.

Welcome Bird!

So if he’s Bird - what are the other dogs named? Is Jack for JackDeJohnette? Do you have a Dizzy or Bud or Monk?

I tried to talk them into Monk for this one, as a matter of fact. I thought it sounded very cool and I might use it for a dog of my own one day. None of their other dogs have music-themed names. It just had to be a music name this time (I bet I don’t have to explain why). Jack is Jack because it’s just a good name for a dog and Brodie is named for the Mallrats character. The clubhouse leader was Levon, and I wish they’d used that one, but my parents felt it just didn’t quite work. I think the stresses didn’t feel right. We would have picked a name from the Band roster but none of them have good dog names - Richard or Manuel, or Robbie, or Garth or Hudson, or Rick or Danko… they tried, but it wasn’t going to happen. We also considered Willie, Miles, Trane, Jericho, Mac, and Muddy. This discussion went on for about a week and I’m glad it’s over.

Beautiful doggies!! Benji says woof, woof! and sends puppy bounces.

There ya go. You could’ve named one Sky so he/she would officially be Skydog (for those not clued in, that’s a nickname of Duane Allman…)

I hadn’t fully appreciated that the Marley family were big Band folks as well as Allman Bro’s and jazz. You will have to educate me on the big musical landmarks at some point - while that poster with the pupper is cool, that is way too many bands!!

The Band thing is much more recent. My dad knew their stuff from way back. Tyler got into them when he saw Levon Helm sit in with the Allman Brothers in March 2009. They did Ophelia, I Shall Be Released, and The Weight. He started going through my dad’s albums a while after that. (I knew some of their stuff from the radio, but I’ve heard more from mix CDs he made.) Richard Manuel was really his favorite, but nobody would have understood those as dog names. Especially since he pronounced his last name “manual.” We would’ve been explaining it forever; at least jazz fans will get where Bird comes from. The jazz theme is pretty recent, too. My dad had tons of jazz records and it was just something he decided he wanted to explore at the end. The guy who raised the dog called him Redman for a little while, and Tyler did like Joshua Redman, but the name didn’t call to us, I guess.

Ah - that all makes sense.

You have excellent taste in dogs! Bird is quite handsome. I have a 4 month old Springer myself.
