Say Something Nice About Your Political Opponents

Given all the disgusting threads celebrating various people’s deaths or suffering, and the animosity in those and other threads, I thought I’d start one that was completely the opposite.
Since I’m a liberal:

General - Thank you, conservatives, for nominating a candidate who has been known for reaching across the aisle to Democrats to produce bills with the cooperation of the other party.
Specific - Thank you, Senator Orrin Hatch, for working to make sure that Marshall Islanders and Americans harmed by nuclear weapons testing could seek some compensation.

Bonus: If we can go the entire thread without saying “but” or “however,” I’ll bring pie.

Thanks to all those Republicans who voted with the Dems to override Bush’s veto of that Medicare Bill today.

Also, McCain is the least intolerable candidate the Pubs could have nominated and I appreciate the way he has made some effort to keep his surrogates from smearing Obama with the really sleazy stuff.

I’d like to thank Reverend Rod Parsley, leader of the World Harvest Church and “Center For Moral Clarity” for not leading a torchlight parade of followers armed with pitchforks and boiling oil to my house tonight, simply because I wore my “Four Out of Five Apes Don’t Want To Be Descended From You Either” T-shirt in public.

Much obliged!

Well, most of my political opponents—on both “sides”—I’m sure, honestly believe that they’re trying to do the right thing. For whatever that buys them.

Thank you Condi Rice for being the only one to notice what General Petraeus was doing in Iraq. That he was one of the few to have any success over there.

Thanks for supporting his strategy in public, even though it isn’t the Sec. of State’s job to oversee war strategy.

Things are getting better there and it is in part because of her support for Petraeus and the surge in troops. Replacing Rumsfeld with Gates also helps.

I’ve been mulling over starting a thread about exactly that. I agree: I truly believe that the bulk of the current adminstration’s officials are trying to improve our lives and help the US. I was going to attach a caveat, and yet I decided not to.

Also, I held my breath when Schwarzennegger became governor, and yet I see that he has performed remarkably well. He has environmental and social policies that I agree with. The thing that I like about him is that he’s not afraid to fail, and he’s not afraid to take risks; overall, I think that someone who can be decisive, make the wrong decision, learn from it and then be decisive about fixing it is better than someone who wants to tie things up in committee for long periods of time, trying to develop the most perfectest legislation ever.

Ha! You butt heads didn’t think I could get through that without abutting myself up against the OP’s desired rules! And yet I squirmed my way out of it!

Well, John McCain does have nice hair. And he looks like he might smell nice.

I hear you on Schwarzennegger, Groo—I may not agree with all of the Governor’s positions or policies, but I do appreciate that, unlike some of his predecessors, he’s actually trying to do something.

I like Arnie.

I am very jealous of how republicans handled the florida/michigan situation during the primaries. They arrived at the obviously best solution before the whole thing turned into a debacle like it did for the Dems and they didnt have to backpedal from their draconian punishment.

Thank you John McCain, for being an awesome soldier, for doing what you think is right, and for maintaining a self-deprecating sense of humor that makes me want to listen to what you have to say.

It seems to me that damning with faint praise doesn’t fulfill the criteria of the OP.

Thank you Condoleezza Rice for blazing new leadership paths for women and minorities, for being unflappably articulate and patient, and for restoring a modicum of respect for the U.S. State Department, which is probably a pretty tough thing to do right now.

I appreciate the fact that you, the FRP (Progress Party, Norwegian politics), bluntly actualize real problems (immigration, prostitution, beggars and thieves in Oslo) considered to be un-PC to address directly by the party I support. Saying that “the organized thieves, trafficked african prostitutes, deliberatly migrating eastern bloc beggars and immigrants from politically safe countries who do nothing to acclimatize or adapt to their new country is a blight on Oslo” is something I agree with and which resonates with large parts of population.

I very much appreciate the elephant in the room being pointed out.

While I seriously despise almost every action Bush has taken as president, on a personal level he seems like a nice enough fellow, the kind you might have fun bar hopping with. And while the particular choices he has made I don’t agree with, he seems sincere in his intentions and in his love for the country.

I thank him for inspiring the parody of himself in Harold and Kumar 2.

And I thank him for giving every citizen the hope that no matter our flaws, any one of us could one day be president.

Actually I’m beginning to appreciate that (other than in the second term not having much of an oppositional candidate and the not wanting to change presidents during a war factor) that might have been a big factor in his electability in the first place. Despite his ties to big money, he comes across as a likable, ordinary schlub, “one of us”.

The one thing nice I can think of saying about Bush is that he doesn’t appear to be a bigot when it comes to his personal relationships. He seems to have developed a geniune friendship with Rice (rumored to be more than just a friendship).

Thank you David Cameron for attempting to change the Conservative party from the “bring back hanging, chuck out the darkies and fuck Europe” party that it had become in its desperate attempt to win votes. I’m not sure you’ve suceeded, but I’m glad you tried. This way we’re now mostly standing on the centre ground rather than running as far as we can in opposite directions of the politcal spectrum, which I think is to the benefit of politics/society in general.

Mr. Harper, I may disagree with some of your policies, but you have an unexpectedly wry sense of humour and–I gotta admit it–the Conservatives are keeping this country on a fairly even keel. Kudos.

John McCain, for someone your age you are very continent.

I didn’t anticipate quite so much damning with faint praise. At least most of the posts have avoided the anti-pie words.
So, Diogenes, Jackmannii, and others now that the first post is out - anything nice to add about the other side? They can’t be that bad, can they? You get to pick who to praise…

My opponent is not and has never been a zombie!
