I’m Canadian and not terribly knowledgeable about the topic, so sorry if this is a dumb question. But if the Dems were to sweep the 2026 midterms, what would that mean? Could they take the majority in both the Senate and the House? If so, what could they do to impede Trump and stop some of his actions? Could they stop his bombing of boats or the impending invasion of Venezuala? What about stopping his trade wars? I know they could impeach him, but I don’t know if that can be done with simple majorities. Could they impeach some of his lackies (Kennedy, Hegseth, etc)? Just what exactly is possible after the midterms?
Conventional thinking is that the Democrats will get a majority in the House. It’s an open question as to by how much though. It could be by a significant amount or it could be a narrow majority. I think it could easily be a 10-15 seat majority but I think others would say it will be larger.
The Senate is likely to stay very close, possibly a 50-50 split or 51 D to 49 R at best. A tie would give VP Vance the tie breaking vote.
Impeachment would happen in the House and is basically the same as an indictment. The trial would happen in the Senate and would require 67 votes to convict and remove. That isn’t going to happen. Not even to any of DJT’s cronies.
For that reason I think any impeachment moves would be a waste of time. The Democrats would be smarter to reestablish the power Congress is supposed to have in a variety of areas the MAGA led House has abdicated. Block every Trump action they can. Defund ICE and conduct investigations into some of their most abusive actions. The Democrats would also be smart to start making their case for what they would do for the country if they can take back the White House in ‘28 to get the country back on track.
I’m sure the Democrats would somehow manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Could the House block Trump’s tarrifs?
Sadly, I agree with this. They did it a month ago with the shutdown causing most people’s jaw to drop to the ground. And that is far from the first time.
I think when people say reps and dems are not different (they are different) they really mean they are all beholden to special interests and not our interests (the general public). Dems are supposed to be for the little guy but, in the end, they support big money same as everyone elected does.
I’m pretty certain the Supreme Court will undo most of the tariffs before then. It was pretty clear in oral arguments most of the Justices see this as being something that had to be authorized by Congress. I don’t see Speaker Johnson getting the House to do much to reimpose them before the election.
If the Democrats “swept” the midterms like the OP asks, the Republicans would lose 22 seats in the Senate leaving them with a mere 31, and Democrats and independents with 69 - enough to convict and remove the president upon impeachment.
And that’s not happening ever again.
The OP defines a sweep as taking control of both chambers.
That would be 51 seats for the Democrats in the Senate.
I think it’s a foregone conclusion that the Democrats win the House and have a fighting chance in the Senate. Affordability will be the driving issue, but this raises the question: what the hell can Democrats do about it? The truth is that the government has very little to do with inflation, save really stupid things like imposing tariffs on its people. If there is a plan to lower inflation that would actually work, I’d like to see it.
The Democrats have a fighting chance of getting a 51 seat majority but no chance of the 2/3rds needed to convict and remove in case of an impeachment.
And I agree with those who have suggested the Ds will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Trump and MAGA will blame them for every single thing that goes wrong with the economy, immigration, etc in the run up to 2028. The media will do little to nothing to push back on that narrative and the Ds will likely lose in '28 as a result.
So injecting huge amounts of money into the economy during COVID wasn’t one of the major causes of inflation?
That certainly was a major contributing factor but that’s well in our rearview mirror now. What can the government do now to reduce inflation?
You should have been more clear about what you meant in your original statement.
It seems likely Dems will get the House, and maybe the Senate. It will make no difference. The Democrats have been an incoherent rabble since God’s dog was a puppy. They have not managed to form a cohesive front against trump in either term. I cannot believe that anything will save us except a third party that is moderate and leaves the extremes of both parties out of their platform. That would be a godsend…
There will never be a third party of any significance, we’re stuck with the two that we have.
If the Democrats take the House, one thing they have going for them is the authority over house committees. They get to assign their party members as the chair, who control the business of the committee. This includes voting on legislation, but it also includes investigative powers.
So, if the Democrats win the House, we can expect public hearings on all manner of corruption. Epstein, DOGE, bribery/kickbacks, tariffs, war, and whatever else they find compelling.
Critics might argue that it will all be for show, but it’s the surest path forward to getting a national conversation going about the rank corruption that is going on.
Both the House and the Senate working together could repeal the bill that gives the president 'emergency" tariff authority.
What keep the shut down pointlessly? Which a decent portion of the MAGAs wanted anyway?
Highly unlikely.
They can also repeal the Presidents emergency war powers, but that seems unlikely.
So is the idea of the Democrats “sweeping” the election. My definition of sweeping in sports is winning every contest. Maybe it’s different in politics.
It was not pointless. If it was pointless why even start it? Why go weeks into and then bail…pointlessly. Oh yeah…reps promised to deal with Obamacare subsidies. Which they just tossed.
ObamaCare subsidies expire; premiums spike for millions: What to know
Democrats held a relatively united front in the last half of 2025 as they sought to pressure Republicans into agreeing to a deal to save the credits. This fight saw the longest government shutdown in U.S. history and GOP infighting between conservatives who staunchly opposed ObamaCare and moderates who sought to stave off constituent anger.
But Republicans left Congress on Dec. 19 for their holiday recess with no deal, setting the stage for a postexpiration fight in the new year.
Way to go DEMS!!! WOOT WOOT! ![]()
The Op and generally politicos would take this to mean the Dems recover both the House and the senate.
Because up to that point, the public was blaming the GOP for the shutdown, and now blaming them for the increase in healthcare.
If the Dems hadnt taken the stand they did, the public wouldnt be aware of the GOP stealth attack on the ACA.
The stand the Dems took and the GOP response hurt the GOP and will show up in this years elections.
Winning the House is the point.
