Right is right, no matter how many are against it.
Wrong is wrong, no matter how many are for it.
Good old Golden Rule, “Treat others as you want to be treated.” It works. Treat people with respect and they will usually treat you well. Go up to them with a chip on your shoulder and they will get difficult.
One from a guy that I work with:
And how true it is.
Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
“What your brain forgets, your feet make up.” Usually pronounced by my mother as I whined about having to walk back to refrigerator/study/bedroom to retrieve the ingredients/supplies/clothes I should have thought to grab the first time.
“Actions speak louder than words.” I found myself saying this to a partner, who swore he didn’t know what it meant. Somehow that made me feel very old.
“It takes 32 muscles to frown, just 20 to smile, and only 15 to extend my middle finger and say, ‘Bite me!’”
I first heard this from Captain Charles Thurston (and in my mind I always include the ‘Howell the Third accent’) :
A short pencil beats a long memory anyday.
Having had a penchant for attracting only the psychotic side of the female of our species :smack:, I think I saw/stole this one off of a previous doper board:
When it comes to women:
Pretty
Smart
Sane
You can only have two. Choose carefully.
(although the Doc’s version could apply as well.)
From my grandmother:
**Pretty is as pretty does.
**
Everything happens for a reason, though you might not see it at the time, you will later.
One I used to say when I was a bartender and later bar owner:
**People who live in liquor bottles shouldn’t throw shot glasses.
**
And my personal favorite from twice experienced:
Life’s a bitch, then you marry her son.
The more common one I have heard is fast, good or cheap.
It even has it’s own triangle!
“Sacrifice in March, corn have plenty starch” describes the annual blood sacrifice of young women we make each year for the sake of a better crop yield. It comes from an episode of South Park, where they explained the media’s fascination of idolizing then demonizing Britney Spearks, Lindsey Lohan, Miley Cyrus, et al.
In a somewhat disturbing way, that makes perfect sense. Certainly fits with my more cynical views of humanity.
“When you point, three fingers are aimed at you” Pretty much that we only see faults in others that we have ourselves.
And another vote for “This too, shall pass.” not so much a saying as the mantra I live by.
I’m guessing that they paraphrased Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”.
“Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.”
Couldn’t agree more.
“You get what you pay for.”
That’s not to say there’s no such thing as a bargain, but generally, if you cheap out on something you’re going to pay for it in aggravation or some other way.
You’re damned if you do, you’re damed if you don’t.
I saw one that I really liked in the “Doper Confessions” thread -
“Pain may be mandatory, but suffering is optional.”
Thanks, EJsGirl!
You’ll find love when you’re not looking for it. Usually said to little old ladies when you’re depressed about being alone. But I’ll be damned if its not true!
“But life isn’t fair; life is just life” (my friend, Donna, who passed way too soon from breast cancer). That has helped me stay balanced through many atrocities.
“If you spend all your time looking at your past, you’ll trip over your future” (my sister)
“It’s not so much that it takes all kinds, it’s just that we **have ** all kinds” (wish I could remember who told me that).
“You have two ears and one mouth for a reason” (so you can listen twice as much as you speak - I still don’t embrace that one properly - thanks, Dad).
“If you think God or insert your own preferred power/creation theory here doesn’t have a sense of humour, just look around.” (Friend’s father).
Heh, I like that one. Although some people (I won’t say just women) have only one of those attributes. But yeah, you’re not going to get more than 2 out of 3.
If you love something, let it go.
If it doesn’t come back, it was never yours to begin with.
Corollary: NO U CANT HAZ. NOT YOURS.
“Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.”
Many things people worry about aren’t a big deal or won’t matter 2 days from now. You have to learn to separate what’s really important and what’s just a temporary annoyance.
