Scariest scenes in a kids' movie?

When I was little there was a Raggedy Anne cartoon that came on tv. The whole movie scared the hell out of me, but I still was drawn to it each time they aired it.

I could never find anyone in my adult life to even confirm that this cartoon existed, with its freaky animation, and its scary taffy monster. But then, just recently, it occured to me…YOU TUBE!. Surely YouTube will have it. Well they do. And it is still vaguely creepy to me. I loved watching it again.

All this talk about Oz, and nobody mentioned the tornado? I had recurring nightmares from that.

Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure. I remember it, too…

Thanks for the wiki link. I had forgotten the part where Babette thinks she isn’t a toy. Just like Toy Story. Hm.

I just remembered a “Little Lulu” cartoon that terrified me when I was a youngster. There was a scene in which Little Lulu had misbehaved, and she was being chased by an angry woman who was singing a song, “Now you done it, you done done done it, you’re gonna get it, too…”

There was an animated version of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow that they always showed on Halloween. To this day I’m still traumatized by the scene where the headless horseman throws his glowing Jack O’ Lantern head straight at the camera.

I loved the Dot movies too, but I don’t remember anything scary about them. To my sorrow, I found a DVD set with both (? were there only 2?) movies, and being me I bought it for a friend who’d never seen them. A few days later I wondered why I didn’t buy them for me too and went to get a second set. All gone! I’ve never seen the set since :frowning:

The Monster Squad- Every 200 years the forces of good and evil (Dracula, Creature, Wolfman, and Mummy) do battle. For the most part, the monsters aren’t too scary. But, one scene is terrifying.

Dad is called into his little boy’s room.

“Mummy’s in the closet.”

Dad opens the closet without looking in and says sarcastically

“Oooh, the mummy. I’m so scared.”

Behind dad is a mummy who doesn’t move or do anything but just stares intently at the boy.

Clash Of The Titans

Most of the stop motion creatures are just cool. Calibos is frightening and Medusa’s face is terrifying.

RE The Dark Crystal

The Skekes look like cancerous vulturemen, behave in an evil manner and scream alot. I remember leaving the theater several times when I saw it.

Another flashback–Jungle Book. The snake in it, with that hypnotizing song scared me senseless. I hate snakes to this day. I didn’t put this together until I bought the video for my (then) rug rats. When that came on, I had a visceral reaction to it. Not wanting to put that on my kids, Mommy suddenly got real busy in the kitchen…

I, too, was hearbroken by the split second change in Wonka. I had memorized the book and I kept saying that the REAL Wonka would never do that…

Oh, yeah, I remember that one a little bit. I loved the music as a kid. I kinda fear looking it up to find out what it was that I loved.

And there’s a scene from Rikki-Tikki-Tavi that I barely remember, but the female cobra says, “Blah blah blah and I will strike,” in this horrible voice and it freaked me out as a kid.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi on YouTube.

Ack. Yep, that’s the quote. I haven’t watched the clip yet.

Nanu-Nanu!

I believe you mean G’mork, the wolf servant of The Nothing.

My boyfriend is still disturbed about Darby O’Gill and the Little People. I don’t think it was the death coach that freaked him out as much as the King of the Leprechauns and the wild ride on the Pooka. I didn’t see it until I was older so it didn’t bother me.
There were some creepy episodes of Star Trek for me but what always freaked me out was that face they showed at the end of the credits. I’d have to look away from the screen before it came up. It was from the episode with little Clint Howard as an alien that looked like a kid but talked like an old man and he used that face to scare others away. Come to think of it, Clint Howard always scared me a little too, I think it was the eyebrows.

Man, I love that movie. Even managed to find a VHS copy on eBay a few weeks back.

My sister was always particularly disturbed by the part when, while fighting the taffy monster,* Andy yanks off chunks of the creature’s own body to choke him with. “Try some of your own medicine, sloppo!”
*Dante himself couldn’t have imagined a more horrific existence for a being than “The Greedy.” What kind of evil must he have committed to earn that kind of Hell?

I agree that was a scary scene. But I don’t consider Pee Wee’s movies to be geared toward kids.

Thank you! And yeah, it was kind of groovy.

If you want some closure, the special edition DVD has a featurette about the tornado. It was basically a big nylon stocking.

I remember Disney’s Sleeping Beauty where the evil queen/sorceress turns into a huge dark evil fire-breathing dragon and says “Now shall you deal with ME, o Prince - and all the powers of HELL!”

I don’t know if was more frightening or just surprising that she said “HELL.”

Oh, and the grasshoppers in A Bug’s Life seemed way terrifying, even to a teenager. They were huge, spiky, and brutal.
