Lake Marie, by John Prine, is a bit creepy. Beautiful though.
way back when, i bought a 9" vinyl copy of the unreleased hellraiser themes by coil.
the proper turntable speed wasn’t indicated on the record, so i tried it at 33 and it was dark and menacing so thats the speed i listened to it at.
got a cd copy later and realized that the record was a 45.
so i would say that the unreleased hellraiser theme music by coil played at 73.333% of intended speed is the scariest music i’ve heard.
Does anyone remember ‘Swamp Witch’ by Jim Stafford? It was pretty creepy when I was a kid. It goes,
*Black Water Hattie lived back in the swamp
Where the strange green reptiles crawl
Snakes hang thick from the cypress trees
Like sausage on a smokehouse wall
Where the swamp is alive with a thousand eyes
An’ all of them watchin’ you
Stay off the track to Hattie’s shack in the back of the Black Bayou
Way up the road from Hattie’s shack
Lies a sleepy, little Okeechobee town
Talk of swamp witch Hattie lock you in when the sun go down
Rumours of what she’d done and rumours of what she’d do
Kept folks off the track of Hattie’s shack
In the back of the Black Bayou…
*
etc. Great song.
I remember the video for Tool’s Prison Sex being pretty damn scary too. They do that a lot. So is Third Eye even though the scary conspiracy phone call thing was a prank.
Going with what I know, there’s Climbing Up The Walls by Radiohead.
I always thought “Can’t Speak” by Danzig was pretty scary, but I still love it…I think it jives with the rest of the album just right.
Well someone already suggested Tyler by the Toadies which was my choice. I do love that song though.
Hmm
Dead Skin Mask by Slayer
In the background you can hear a little child saying "Mr. Gein, please let me out. "
(Dead Skin Mask is about the serial killer Ed Gein who was the inspiration for Hannibal Lector)
When I was younger, I was afraid of Helter Skelter bu the Beatles.
No Particular Order
“Nothing To Gein” by MuDvAuNe- Just creepy. Same subject as Slayer “Dead Skin Mask”
“213” by Slayer- Jeffrey Dahlmer is the subject
“O Death” by Ralph Stanley- don’t know why but this song just gives me the creeps
“Ovature of the Rebel Angel” by Danzig- Classical music but very dark.
“Kill You” or “My Gift to You” by Korn- just creepy in a cathartic sort of way
Well…Stealing Babies by Our Lady Peace always creeps me out for some reason…maybe because it seems so disjointed, but I think it’s the tune that really gets me…
…Eve stands alone,
by the knock on the door,
by the thin in her bones,
she’s courages and loving…
Exausted and cold,
she’s not ready to go,
so the ghost on the phone,
helps her safely into her dream…
Psycho Killer by Talking Heads is one that I find very creepy in a controlled, hypnotic sort of way. Oh yes, and any version of Muskrat Love make blood immediate spurt from my ears.
this album:

“Don’t Laugh” - Josh Wink
First time I heard it I about lost my sh*t.
devil to pay, that album is great.
Now if you want a creepy Mike Patton band song, “Desert Search for Techno Allah” by Mr. Bungle has always seemed very creepy to me. It has always sounded like something otherworldy creeping through the gate. You can hear a snippet on Amazon.
I also second Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy” and Radiohead’s “Climbing up the Walls”.
Strange Fruit gets to me. Billie Holiday sings it so beautiful & somber and pulls me into the lyrics. It’s creepy, sad and thought provoking.
Siouxie & the Banshees did an over the top (but excellent nonetheless) version that sounds like a funeral dirge. The Siouxie version doesn’t have quite the same emotional impact as the lynching aspect doesn’t hit quite so hard. Her version tends to make me think of the v. creepy film Something Wicked This Way Comes.
Either one is chilling though.
For more fun scares I like just about anything by Nick Cave. The Devil Jumped Up is a good one. It’s creepy but with a somewhat zany storyline which is so common of dear Nick.
“Aqualung” Jethro Tull
Sitting on a park bench –
eyeing ittle girls with bad intent.
Snot running down his nose –
greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes.
Drying in the cold sun –
Watching as the frilly panties run.
Feeling like a dead duck –
spitting out pieces of his broken luck.
I would paste the whole song, but I just threw up a little bit.
