SCARY Fast Cars...Your Anecdotes

He probably thinks you meant a Shelby Cobra. People outside of North America aren’t really hip with all the different Mustang permutations.

Ah, well I’m planning to use Mustang Cobra parts to build Factory Five’s version of a Shelby Cobra.

Back to the OP:

The scariest ride I’ve ever been in appeared to be a moderately modified Dodge Pickup with Cummins turbodiesel.

Pulling out of our oversize outdoor lot (for vehicles too tall to fit in the garage) I pulled into traffic to drive back to the porte cochere, I gave it some gas so i wouldn’t be caught in the middle of the intersection.

This thing jumped into high boost way faster than other dodge diesels I’ve parked.

The Owner was kind enough to pop the hood and show me the bling.

Big VNT turbo force-feeding a small, instant boost VNT turbo…and a giant intercooler to draw the heat off the charge.

Owner also claims to have a performance chip and nitrous oxide and propane injection. Plus mods to the auto trans and transfer case.

I had unknowingly put 850+ hp to the ground via all four wheels.

I have to wonder why Ford never saw fit to put a 4V head on the regular Mustang GT around or at the same time they were using it for the Cobras. I suppose it was a cost issue (like their claims about the live rear axle)…but still. I find it odd they decided to jump from 2V to 3V instead of just going to 4V and having an even number of valves per cylinder like most car companies do. Just seemed a bit strange and I can imagine some performance-oriented guys working in development for Ford pulling their hair out over it. It just seems like a lame compromise. And Enola, you gotta watch out for those Cummings diesels, modded or not…they can pull a house down the street at 2,000 RPM’s!

The 3V was likely cheaper than the 4V and made similar power. The 4V has twice as many camshafts, timing chains, etc. I guess they finally gave in though, as every performance V8 from Ford is now DOHC.

Yeah, but will it do mid twelves in the quarter , right out of the box? I have an '87 GN (original owner) that is mildly modded and will do low 12’s all day long @ 106MPH on street tires. These turbo V6 motors are ALL torque. I’m putting out 450 ft lbs of torque and only 350 RWHP. My wife’s SRT8 Challenger dynoed at 425 RWHP and 415 ftlbs and does the quarter in the low 13’s @ 108mph, but that thing weighs over 4000 lbs!

Scariest car I drove? My buddy has an '08 Challenger SRT8 with a supercharger running 8 pounds of boost. He’s done the 1/4 in high 10’s @ 128MPH.

Jaguar XFR. The fact that I was a passanger and the driver was ex-Formula 1 and on racetrack might have had something to do with it.

uh, is it “right out of the box” or is it modded?

Jackie, I presume?

In the mid 90s, when I was into Shelby Dodges, I was at a Shelby Dodge club meet. I had recently wrecked my Daytona Shelby Z and I was looking for another car. I test drove a guys Omni GLH Turbo. He had put an intercooler on it and a big cam and turbo from Mopar Performance. Im driving it pretty sedately, short shifting it when I end up in 3rd gear at about 2500 rpm. The car is bogging(big cam and turbo remember) so Im pushing the pedal almost all the way to the floor and its barely gaining revs. The owner is riding with me and says “Its gonna come on in a second so be careful.” Luckily, I let off the pedal a little. The car finally reaches 3000 rpm and its like you hit a switch. The stumble fades and it starts screaming like mad, heading toward 6000 rpm. The boost gage goes from vacuum to 14# in about 1 second with an audible whack as the gage pegs. So there I sit at 30 mph in 3rd gear smoking the tires as the little FWD car darts all over the road as I try to wrestle it under control. Good times.

Roberto.

My second favorite Dodge Omni! (I knew a guy with a GLH-S. That was… an interesting car. (oh god oh god oh god))

I was talking about a GNX doing 12’s right out of the box. As I said my **GRAND NATIONAL **is “lightly modded” (Bolt on stuff)

Gotta love that turbo lag!

Fantastic rally cars those were. Yet most people never looked at them twice because they were not terribly attractive.
