Steve, The politicians didn’t do it without begging and pleading from the Schindlers. In fact, I’d say Washington was even less of a willing participant than were the Schindlers. They were called, harassed, harangued, and finally took the case up as if they gave a shit.
A colleague of my mom’s was apparently convinced that the poor, poor Schindler’s were being “used” by DeLay and Frist, those poor, poor people! Pawns of the Republican congress!
I call bullshit. Congress didn’t want any part of this for fear of the backlash, but as soon as they tested the waters and moved forward, there was no way out for them.

And even now that the autopsy report is out and there is no possible shred of an excuse for spreading nonsense, Bill Frist is still doing it. From today’s paper, here’s Frist trying to wriggle out from under:

So Bill, even though it’s been demonstrated that Schiavo’s brain was tremendously shrunken and atrophic, that she was blind, and could not have recovered brain function, you still are clinging to your line of bullshit? Are you saying that because it has revealed your shabby attempt at self-aggrandizement, forensic pathology is not believable? Will you now be counseling patients to ignore their pathology reports showing a malignant tumor, because it’s just analysis of “dead tissue”?
The GOP had better get cracking finding some decent candidates for '08, because it’s going to be too embarassing for any self-respecting sentient human to vote for Frist.

A minor quibble between you and I, Steve. I’m simply tired of hearing people paint the Schindler’s as unwilling participants and “victims” of the GOP.
No quibble at all then. Both the politicians and the Schindlers were using each other. The Schindlers were the most guilty of all. The rest were just the vultures who tried to cash in. I wonder how many people were vastly upset that the CAT scan or autopsy (whatever) failed to show any broken bones, crushed windpipes or other signs of foul play.
I know there are many, many people who were and still are looking for those signs of abuse. How many people will invent excuses/conspiracies as to why they didn’t find signs of abuse? The whole thing is fucking surreal.

I find it telling that less than an hour after the live report of the autopsy result the Schindler’s lawyer was already tossing further acusations at Michael Sciavo. There would not have been time for their medical “experts” to review and discuss these findings and for them to even come up with a plan. S o it looks like they had planned to continue making accusations all along, no matter what the autopsy results showed.
if anyone is up for a good laugh you should check out what sean hannity’s fans are saying about it on his website. its a big selfcongratulatory circle jerk (has there ever been a finer phrase coined?). they’re convinced that the evil scientists have either been paid off or are inept. one person stated “I mean, I read the internet and talk to a lot of people, surely I know just as much as people who went to school for 8 years, right?”.
I really don’t think it’s a GOP thing. I can’t recall a Democratic leader who bucked too hard until the polls came out. I think this was a decency thing. Lots of Republican and Democrat just-plain-people saw eye-to-eye on this one.
