I read with some interest, about the quality of shavers today. I currently reside in Mainland China… (Australian)
I dont know whether I am unusual in the way I grow my facial hair, but I have not found a decent disposable shaver in China. They do market Schick and Gillette etc .electric shavers are as popular as MP3,S .Disposables are made here under license. Very expensive (compared to living costs here …about ( three dollars Aust) for 2 only…and poor quality. Turbo whatsies are frightfully expensive …about 56yuan .(approx.$10.00 Aus).with the flash turbo handle !..big deal…with 2 blades then 45yuan to buy refills …what a take !!
When I have my first shave with either one, it is not close at all. In Australia, the quality and shaving performance was very good. Other brands in China are terrible. I couldn,t shave my butter with them …Really that bad ! (Threw them in the toilet )
I have written two letters to their supposedly After Sales Dept …with no reply.
Now their Email adress is non existent. I think they get away with it, because the Chinese male has" Bum Fluff "on his face (he could shave with a plastic bread knife) and their women have no hair on their legs whatsoever!
Does anyone else have similar experience …thankyou …love your site!
Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Board, virgosailor, glad to have you with us from China!
When you open a thread, it’s helpful to other readers if you provide a link to the column upon which you are commenting. Helps keep everyone on the same page and saves searching time. In this case, I presume it’s Are twin-blade razors better than single-blade ones from 1983.
There’s also been Straight Dope Staff Report: Shaving seminar: (a) With the grain or against it? (b) Hot water or cold?
Sounds like you’re stuck in a country where razors just aren’t needed that much – the ol’ supply and demand problem. You might ask friends or relatives back in Australia to send you supplies that are hard to get in China; I’ve had similar experiences with friends in the Peace Corps in various places (Siberia and Madagascar and …) ask me for what I thought was pretty common stuff that they couldn’t find.
New from Ronco - Turbo Whatsies!
You might consider investing in a qood-quality straight razor, as well as spending the extra time to wet your face. Further, take a minute to massage in the shaving cream. I found it helps.
If “Turbo Whatsis” means the M3 Power Turbo (a flashy 3-blade thing with a tiny vibrator in the handle,) they cost around $10 US here, with just the one blade. I haven’t bought disposables for a while.
Yea, about that link…
Are you sure the brand name razors you buy aren’t knockoffs?
Counterfeit goods in China? Surely you jest.
He’s not jesting, and don’t call him Shirley
Obvious, but try shaving after you shower. Softens the beard.
