I liked it from the start, but now after just finishing S3 I can see that it got much better as it went along. LOVE David!!!
I haven’t seen it, but was reading about it over the weekend and it sounds pretty good. I think I may check it out.
I just started watching S1 last night on the recommendation of a friend, who described it as “Arrested Development” meets “Green Acres”. I am still giggling to myself today about the episode with the town sign. “It’s OK, it’s his sister!”
The downside: I can only take Chris Elliot in small doses. And Catherine O’Hara is just a little TOO over the top.
I know certain people I would never recommend this show to. It’s a certain kind of humor - you have to really listen to their lines. It’s not in your face slapstick. My husband, for one, would miss half of what was said and I’d have to repeat the lines to him just because he wouldn’t pay close enough attention.
I am going to bump this thread as Season 4 was the best yet.
I don’t want to spoil it too much, but if any TV writer wants a lesson in how to not make your characters caricatures of themselves (ala The Office), this show is perfect. The characters have not changed their underlying motivations or personalities but they show emotion and growth as we’ve come to appreciate them and the show. The lines are still over the top as always, but the greatest scene(s) were the return of Mutt and Alexis’s refusal to admit responsibility for killing his plants from neglect since Season 2?3? while also demonstrating that she has grown hugely in her own way.
I will add my prediction that the show is going to end up with all four leads becoming successful in business (and life) by leveraging their own unique talents… except Johnny, but I don’t know what his endgame will be yet.
The knowledge that Twila (the waitress) is Eugene’s daughter and Dan’s sister in real life makes the whole show more charming to me.
We watched the first season on Netflix and really enjoyed it, we plan to try and watch the rest of it.
+1
So it’s not just a clever title then?
The show just keeps getting better and better - the first season it was okay, kind of droll but not super funny, and this season, we were laughing out loud half the time at things that had no business being as funny as they were (like David running a few steps). The characters are also for more endearing than they have any business being - dare I say that they are all growing up?
The only sour note continues to be Roland Schitt, who is just a garbage human being that no self-respecting person would continue to tolerate in their lives.
I watched the first episode and was unimpressed, but started watching it again because it’s on right before my current favourite tv show, Working Moms, and got hooked after catching the ends of some of the episodes. It’s a show that had to grow on me a bit, but now I really like it.
The Chris Elliot character was really unlikeable the first time I watched. They seem to have made him a bit less annoying.
I think they have made him less annoying by not having him on screen as much-whereas his wife’s roll has grown significantly- her courtroom B-plot to get on the jury was a riot. But I think that even Roland’s character has the redeeming characteristic of being so in love and in awe of his wife. I did notice that Stevie does give him more respect than anyone else- it’s as if she has grown up with him the whole time.
I started this thread and I don’t even know what channel it’s on!!! I’ve only watched it on Amazon first and then noticed it on Netflix. Where can I find it?
It’s a Canadian show. I don’t think is available in the US except from streaming services (Amazon / Netflix)
That’s what I thought. I guess I’ll just have to wait.
Thanks
Bumping to tell everyone to watch this show. Season 5 now available on Netflix.
Such a charming show.
Dan Levy is as talented as his Dad, Eugene Levy.
Plus, it has Catherine O’Hara. NEVER a bad thing!!
I can absolutely understand why people wouldn’t get into it. Like Best In Show and many of the other Guest movies, it has a very specific style that’s not going to work with a lot of people. However, if you do like that type of comedy it’s great.
I only started watching it a few months ago and flew through Seasons 1 - 4 in about two weeks. When I wasn’t paying attention, my Tivo recorded season 5 so I watched that last week. So far, I think season 5 has been the best yet. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say that I was very surprised at how well those two could sing and dance.
Yay! Excellent timing, it’s going to be a rainy/snowy weekend, perfect for binging.
GF and I are about 2/3 through the second season. We both love this show, it gets big laughs out of both of us every episode. The facial expressions of every character in the show are alone worth the price of admission.
I think the first 3 episodes, while great, give indicators that the show is going to be something very different than what it is. People expect fish out of water cringe comedy and that’s not what it is at all.
I think it’s probably the best show people aren’t watching. Easily my favorite comedy of the decade.
Also, that version of the song Caberet is probably the best I have seen.
